While making a discord does limit the amount of chatter in OOC, it will still be used for posting characters and for your announcements, which means it won't be dead. 

Discord servers for RPs, in my opinion, are great tools. Planning collaborations is much simpler, it's usually far more active since people are able to access it with ease, it keeps people in the loop, you get a good meme or two out of it... It's really interactive. Keeps the cast coming back. I really recommend it, but if you're against it that's fine. 

EDIT: As far as what Dead Cruiser says, I personally disagree. While it can get a bit crazy, that's kind of the point. It's a bit more about socializing than strictly RP talk. If you want, you can always make a channel just for game chatting. Also, I know a lot of RPs that would be dead if it wasn't for their good discord server.
