Do we have to be established characters or can we make OC's?

If it is established characters only, can I play Superman?  The intent is to play the character as the comics or the animated series portray him, someone that likes helping people.  The heroic symbol.  He will not be all powerful.  Maybe among the greatest heroes yes, but he's going to get knocked around.
