Before the coming of Robert Baratheon, the Lord's of Driftmark had often allied themselves closely with House Targaryen, and the blood of the Royal House is in their veins to this very day. Often they had married Princes or Princesses before the War of the Usurper. Once nearly even making themselves Kings. Robert Baratheon stripped them of much power, but on the back of the bastard Aurane Waters, they climbed back into the good graces of royalty once again.
Head of House
Aerion Velaryon, Lord of the Tides
Seat
Castle Driftmark and High Tide
Demesne
The Island of Driftmark
Recent History
When Daenerys Targaryen returned to Westeros on dragonback House Velaryon was nearly gone, with only young Lord Monterys Velaryon left to inherit. However, another scion of the ancient House still lived and thrived, Aurane Waters. Monterys uncle Aurane had become a Pirate King in the Stepstones and bound to his will the disparate pirate Lords of that land. When the Targaryen Queen landing she soon found herself with a fleet, as Aurane and his pirate vassals sailed to pledge allegiance to her cause. Not long after Aurane and his fleet along with what few forces Monterys possessed fought with distinction in the War of the Dawn, For this service Aurane was legitimized, a bastard no more, and granted the newly minted Lord Paramountcy of the Stepstones. Aurane minted new Lords to serve him, creating the Houses of Saan and others out of his Pirate allies. Soon he struck up new, faster trade routes between the Free Cities and Westeros and gained much more wealth for his house. Aurane was certain not to turn his back on his family, however, and assisted Monterys in rebuilding the Velaryon fleet destroyed from years of war as well as restoring the Castle of High Tide while also building himself a seat on the island of Bloodstone. Monterys for his part grew to be a capable steward of Driftmark, growing the size and prosperity of both Castle Driftmark and High Tide's market towns. Thanks to his skills Monterys would serve as Daenerys' Hand for near twenty years before his death. These two Houses Velaryon would prosper under Daenerys' rule, with scions often serving as members of the Queen's small council. Most recently was Lord Aerion Velaryon who, at the young age of 26, attained the position of Hand in 364 AC. Unfortunately, no good fortune lasts forever. In the year 369 AC Aegon Velaryon, Lord Paramount of the Stepstones and Master of Whispers overstepped. With Queen Daenerys aging and growing infirm he sought true control of the Iron Throne. Dispatching his eldest son Aegon tried to Kidnap the Queen while she was returning from Lys. His plans were foiled by the Iron Fleet, however, and when the Master of Ships Baldric Estermont thought to investigate Aegon's holding he was slain. Then, seemingly in a rage at his own failure, Aegon put the Estermonts to the sword. Thus began the 'Stepstones Rebellion'. As soon as he learned of the crimes of his Kinsmen Aerion sought to rally the Royal fleet to attack Aegon on Bloodstone, hoping to win glory and the adoration of his Queen by defeating Aegon before she returned. It seemed the Gods had other plans though and the Royal fleet was thrown off course by a great storm. By the time it arrived at Bloodstone the final battle was already being fought by the Greyjoy and Baratheon fleets. Aerion could merely watch as Bloodstone was captured and raided by the Ironborn. It would only get worse from there. Upon his return to King's Landing, an incensed Danaerys accused Aerion of treason and conspiracy with Aegon. It was after all Aerion who appointed him to the Master of Whispers. Aerion also arrived so late with the Royal fleet she was convinced he had wished to reinforce whichever side he thought would win. Aerion, for his part, argued fiercely and combatively with his Queen so great was the young mans' pride and vanity. This foolishness nearly cost Lord Aerion his life and only the impassioned testimony of Grand Maester Torrhen, exonerating Aerions' story and speaking highly of his loyalty that cleared Aerion of treason. Even so, Danaerys stripped him of his handship and made the Stepstones into lands held by the Master of Ships, the newly made Harmund Greyjoy. Furious, for a time Aerion left for High Tide to sulk over this turn of misfortune. But, not long after with Danaerys growing so weak as to rarely leave the royal apartments he returned. Now, as the Queen's life fades, Aerion hopes to win back his families power and lands.
Realm Relations
House Greyjoy: To say that the Houses of Velaryon and Greyjoy are currently cold to one another may be an understatement. The 'saviors' of Queen Daenerys Targaryen during the Stepstones Rebellion it was the longships of the Iron Fleet that arrived first in the Stepstones and it was Iron Born raiders who first engaged the Rebels. Worst of all, once the war was over the Greyjoy's supported the Queen's accusations against Her hand Aerion Velaryon claiming he was in league with the traitor Aegon Velaryon. To this day their relations is chilly at best, and outright hostile far more often. House Baratheon: Unlike the Greyjoys, House Baratheon is rather less at odds with the Lords of the Tide. Lyonel Baratheon, while perhaps understandably suspicious of Lord Aerion's role in the rebellion but was not openly in favor of Aerion's head being placed on a pike. However, with Jaecaerys placement within the Gold Cloaks it may be that the two houses could grow closer in the coming days. In addition, Aemon Velaryon of Bloodstone has been raised since his fourth name day in Storms End as a hostage and ward. He has grown to see the Baratheons, for the most part, as an adoptive family for their kindness to him. House Royce: Despite House Velaryon of Driftmark being loyal during the Stepstones rebellion it would seem House Royce hold some grudge for the death of Mathos Royce, former commander of the Queen's Guard. His death at the hands of Aegon's forces was unfortunate but such is the fate of warriors. It Seems House Royce believes wholeheartedly Aerion is to blame, as he appointed Aegon to the position that allowed him to rebel. This belief that House Velaryon 'got off easy' and were as traitorous as their Stepstones cousins. House Velaryon of Bloodstone: Aegon Velaryon ruined everything. Aerion was Hand of the Queen to the ailing Daenerys. He was young, ambitious and capable. Soon he would be the most powerful man in Westeros. Then his father in law Aegon, Lord Paramount of the Stepstones, decided he could wait no longer. After his appointment to the master of Whispers by Aerion he used his new position to try and kidnap the Queen. And since the fool couldn't even succeed in that Aerion has been left to suffer the consequences. Stripped of his Hand-ship and cast down from the High court. In some ways, Aerion is happy Aegon escaped death. In exile, he could drag Aerion down no lower. As for his young Sisters-in-law, Aerion thinks little of them and their fates. Alive or dead, seeking to return or not, Aerion has spared them little thought. Two exiles half a world away.
Storyline Premise
House Velaryon is back on the rise. After Aegon Velaryon tore down so much work, Aerion seeks to re-establish his dynasty as more than mere words of an island. He wants to once more be invaluable to his monarch and hold a Lord Paramountcy. He will side with whichever side seems to best help his interests and secure his power once again. With a son disdainful of his destined role, and Aerion desperate to take back the power and prestige he once held a clash of their interests is inevitable, even if their goals may line up better than either expected. As for young Aerion, one of the last of House Velaryon of Bloodstone in Westeros, his story is one of struggle. He struggles for recognition past his 'traitorous blood' and helps his adopted family. In the end, he will also need to decide if his accursed, ancient name is worth keeping, or if he'd be better discarding it for that of his mother. As his great grandfather lays heirless over the respectable holdings of House Bywater he will need to choose carefully his next moves in life. Is House Baratheon, a family who helped to kill so many of his, worth fighting for? Is this adopted family of his one to be proud of service too? Or should Aemon look elsewhere, and seek a truer family to return too? Only time will tell. The former Hand of the Queen Aerion Velaryon was somewhat of a prodigy in his youth after all, which is what led to his appointment as Hand at the young age of one and twenty. He was a well-regarded mariner and commander of ships by the age of nine and ten. A mere year before that he brokered a truce between a pair of royal vassals on the verge of open war, cementing himself as a capable envoy and diplomat. The then young Lord Aerion was often thought of to be the next 'Sea Snake' for House Velaryon and surely destined for great things. He served the Queen loyally and capably for five years as hand, ruling in her name while she was away in Lys with much prestige. However, the seeds of Aerion's downfall were planted by the man sometime before, when he appointed his father in law Aegon Velaryon to the Small Council. This kind gesture to he friend and kinsmen seemed perhaps well-meant but Aegon would prove it to be a mistake of great and terrible magnitude. As the Master of Whispers Aegon plotted to kidnap his Queen on her return from Lys and force her into a proper Regency wit him and Aerion at its head. Unfortunately, Aegon was far too ambitious by half, and his plan failed when the Ironborn thwarted his plan and killed his eldest son. In a petulant rage, Aegon slaughtered the Master of Ships, Baldric Estermont, and his family. This made the situation an open rebellion. Aerion, who claims to have known nothing of his Father-in-laws' plot rallied the royal fleet and attempted to capture Aegon on Bloodstone before Daenerys could return and put this rebellion down swiftly. Unfortunately, he was delayed by a summer storm and would not reach Bloodstone until the rebellion was already done... or so Aerion claims. The Queen was livid and wasted no time leveling charges of treason to Aerion claiming he had no doubt colluded with his kinsmen to usurp her throne. Only the impassioned words of Grand Maester Torrhen who claimed Aerion was truly loyal saved the Lord of Tides from block or Wall. In disgrace, Daenerys stripped the Lord Velaryon of his handship, gave away the Step Stones to the new Master of Ships Harmund Greyjoy and robbed Aerion of his reputation. Now grown older and wiser Aerion will stop at nothing to regain the powers he lost. Still ambitious and still proud he seeks to place his house once more on top even amidst the doubter and sycophants who still name him traitor. Aerion will see them all beneath him.
Attributes & Talents
The Sea Snake Aerion has been sailing on the deck of a ship since he could walk. The waves are as close to him as the earth, and seawater runs as surely through his veins as any Iron Born reaver. An experienced captain and admiral Aerion can command a boat or fleet as well as most knight command their horse or a flank of lancers. Sailing cogs, carracks and war galleys Aerion is second to none riding on the tides. Voice of the Dragonlords The Lord of the Tides is an accomplished diplomat and envoy, having learned on board merchant vessels to the Free cities and within Westeros as Lord of High Tide. Brokering relationships between houses as well as individuals is a well trained and practiced skill Courtly intrigue Aerion is no stranger to the art of politics and plots having been elevated to Hand of the Queen so young. The Lord of Driftmark is willing and able to carry out what must be done to protect his interests and those of his house. Calculating, decisive and intelligent Aerion is no amateur. The Old, the Proud, the Vain Aerion is an intensely Proud man protective of his status and reputation. Combine this with a notable vanity and Aerion takes jests, insults and perceived slights poorly when he is on the receiving end.
