None too tall, none too wide. Tychus, in spite of his epicure lifestyle, is in shape and is aging rather well. He has a square-jawed, handsome face and affable smile. Together with his rugged charm, these can disarm many during a first meeting. Tychus is an energetic everyman, capable of both intricate and simple speech depending on what audience to cater to.

The group of senators Tychus Alastor heads are known as the ‘Axis Caucus’, because they are devoted to the interests of Alsakan and the Perlemian Trade Route. The Caucus ideals are rooted in the belief central government should meddle as little as possible in local affairs. As such they are deeply concerned with the Republic, while maintaining a regional focus and entertaining a ‘confederate’ point of view. Local independence should not be limited by general government.

Tychus consequently straddles a somewhat politically ambiguous position between the Core and Rim factions and has acquaintances, enemies and allies (such as the Pantoran Senator Eyri Pharliis) on either side of the aisle.

For instance, Tychus has been a long-time promoter of a strong military to counter the Imperial threat, but at the same time opposes stringent Republic meddling in local systems and governments. He is a strong proponent of force projection in the Northern Dependencies, and has expressed Alsakan willingness to do so itself should the Republic not be up to the challenge.

Furthermore, he agrees with the Rim faction that special attention should be given to the plight of refugees and migrants. However, Tychus sees these as an opportunity to expand Alsakan (and Republic) influence along the Perlemian Trade Route and newly charted Hydian Way.

Hard-working and hard-boiled, grizzled, and a bit of thrill-seeker. Ironclad, he knows the system is rigged, and always had been. However, he wants more than just a decent cut of it. Tychus is dedicated to getting by and doing good for his people. He enjoys pushing people’s buttons. Tychus likes antagonising and badgering people, skills he puts to use in the political arena. Doesn't shy away from controverse. Life has been hard on him, and now he is in a position to influence the lives of others for the better he simultaneously finds himself enjoying his elevation. Tychus is able to take pleasure from the little things. Always a bon-vivant, he also developed a fondness for hooch.

"Tychus Alastor was one of the most decent men I ever encountered during the Great War. Most everyone else, I can safely say, was either a victim or a villain or quite often both. There's a cocksureness, an overconfidence about him that can make you bridle initially. I know I did, first laying eyes on him. This upstart peacock, fresh from the academy. I ain’t never gonna forget him shouting in that gravelly stentorian tone of his on our first contact: ‘Keep your intervals wide, your eyes open and your and your mate’s asses covered. Fucking move!’ First time I ever heard an officer talking sense. Yet over time you come to see him as a valuable ally and — dare I say it? — a friend.

At first glance, Captain Ty seems like a backwoods buckaroo, one of those good old boys swapping lies about the days gone by. The Cap’ was never shy for a smile, friendly on the surface… tough as nails underneath. He used to smack the fear out of the rookies. You can’t have them freeze up, y’know? No man left behind and all that.

Aye, Tychus Alastor was a most decent and honourable man, and he led with dignity and example. It all came from belief. Captain Ty believed in himself and believed in us. And from that grit came the strength that allowed him and us who followed him to survive everything else the Galaxy threw at us. Not sure how he kept on after the war though. Cap’ got dealt a bad hand. His was one of the greatest tragedies."

Growing up on the Founding World of Alsakan, Tychus was steeped in history and legends of free-spirited individuals. Reflecting their views, the ancient Alsakani national epic, the [i]Archaiad[/i], described the Perlemian Trade Route as "an arrow sent into the possible". Consequently, they had sought a limited economic and political union when the Galactic Republic was formed, and for much of their history were inclined to see Coruscant as too powerful, resulting in the many Alsakan Conflicts. Just as his people were aristocratic in their values and enthusiastic for open spaces and local independence, so was Tychus. Tychus grew up on tales of younger sons seeking distance from authority: adventurers and glory-hounds establishing small colonies in the Inner Rim, and caring little for government bureaucracy or mass-produced goods beyond warships and blasters. These were stories he could very well relate to, being a younger son with a rebellious nature and a strained relationship with his parents. 

His own family were the descendants of hunters, freelance pilots, and mining contractors who had built Alsakan's militias into a formidable fighting force. Despite accumulating wealth and power and thus penetrating the ranks of the aristocracy, Tychus's parents never forgot their frugal origins and tried to instill the values of personal discipline and order in their son. In his adolescence, Tychus had joined his uncle Govian on several hunting and trekking expeditions in the dangerous Ten Valleys, geographic relics of Alsakan’s primeval past. The Ten Valleys were also where Archais’ pivotal battle for Alsakan unification took place, further cementing Tychus’ admiration of his people’s history and identity. In addition, through Govian, Tychus learned the importance of triumphing over challenging odds and finding solutions to bring order to chaos.

For much of their early history, the Alsakani did not adopt Old Galactic Standard and continued to speak High Galactic. They were responsible for popularising the High Galactic alphabet as an alternative to Aurebesh, as part of Alsakan's efforts to portray itself as an alternate galactic capital. The High Galactic script was created after the Alsakani combined Tionese characters with others of their own invention, creating a distinctive new alphabet. Owing to Alsakan's values, High Galactic became a popular script among upper-class speakers of Galactic Basic, and its influence endured for millennia during and after the Alsakan Conflicts. Furthermore, the Alsakani experienced significant Tionese influence due to their prolonged occupation during the Tionese War (ca. 24,000 BBY). This occupation was even envisioned as having substantially influenced Alsakani culture and language, even going so far as to inculcate a myth that the Alsakani were a lost Tionese colony.

Tychus went on to study history and linguistics at Xenvaer University’s Arts and Philosphy faculty. Torn between an academic or literary career, Tychus spent a year travelling and working the odd job. This was when he met his future wife. He eventually wanted to pursue historical research, but instead of becoming an authority on Alsakan heritage, the prolonged war chose for him. He decided to ‘do his part’. His degree landed him in ‘officer school’, and consequently a position as lieutenant. Tychus ended his military career with the rank of captain, commanding a company known as “the Arrowheads”. By the time of the treaty they had ended up with the sobriquet of “Alastor’s Alsakans”. During the course of the conflict, personal tragedy struck: his son died in an accident while training to become a Jedi, and his wife perished from some illness.

After the war, Tychus discharged and went into politics. He was committed to alleviating the plight of refugees, particularly those tied to Alsakan colonisation efforts along the Perlemian. Possessing wits and charm made him an effective politician who knew how to shape an attractive narrative. Particularly his knowledge on his people’s past made him an appealing candidate on Alsakan itself. Tychus’ military service further burnished his reputation, while his personal history and sob-story won him the sympathy vote. He ran on a platform addressing the Republic’s failure to utterly defeat the Empire. In particular, he lamented the loss of the Outer Rim reaches of the Perlemian Trade Route – what the Alsakans referred to as “the Axis”. To this he appended malcontent concerning the loss of the newly charted northern Hydian Way and patchy Republic presence in the Northern Dependencies. Tychus strongly advocates taking control over the non-aligned worlds, consolidating Republic sway over the region.
