My favorite part about sci-fi has always been the elaborate technologies, and how we can take what we already know and stretch the boundaries. With the "because they have technology that can do that" trope, there are so many unique and interesting concepts that can be explored.
Likewise, criminals and rogues having the upper hand compared to factions restricted by laws and regulations has always been an interesting concept to me. After all, given sufficiently advanced technology, and a willingness to break rules to get results, who knows how far you could get?
