His mind worked over the events of the day, and both eyes and mind went back to the dataslate - blinking upon its luminous face were the exploits of the Tanith First and Only, the so-called 'Gaunt's Ghosts' of yore - thoughts of the now entirely deceased regiment of superlative light infantry only casting doubt into his mind about the future of his own specialists in light and reconnaissance warfare, a regiment he had been gifted command of that very day! The (Fifty-Second) Uzanian Rifles, a fresh founding on the orders of the Lord-Protector himself, and the cream of Uzania Primes youth and PDF experience ground into a new formation, sat in their barracks and awaited his order to embark into the unknown - they were not, and would never be, the Tanith...but he knew they had the potential to be. As his chill glass of amasec touched his lips once more he allowed his mind to wander, to think over Uzania Prime itself - a world very like Ancient Terra, before the oceans evaporated, the central and inhabited world of a small sector of several planets - the society inhabiting it being very much what one would expect of a planet classed as 'Civilised' by the powers that be. True, it was more stratified into rurals and urbanites (or farmers and blue bloods if you like) than some planets, but this only made the forming of regiments and their officer cadre easier. There we those among his regiment from all walks of life - from the rugged highlanders and mountain men and women, to the amphibious experts of the ocean-dwelling nations - Uzania Prime being a planet split into many locations. They had all come here to the capital city of Ancerora for basic training over a nearly eight month period - something almost unheard of among the ranks of the Guard - specialising in different environments present on the planet, and specifically in irregular warfare. Yes, tomorrow he would take them into the stars, and from there who knew to what end?
You're fresh, you're (mostly) prepared, you are (mostly) proud men and women of the Uzanian Rifles! You are a part (the 3rd platoon of the 2nd company) of the fifty-second tithing of a regiment known for their abilities to operate in most climates and weather conditions as light infantry and reconnaissance troops. Trained to be individualistic and trusting in ones own abilities in the heat of the moment, as well as the soldier beside you, the Uzanians (Oo-zarnians) take to the field clad in standard-issue 'Cadian pattern' uniforms (for now) though patterned in woodland camouflage and armed with a slightly altered pattern of lascarbine, being less of a carbine and more of a longer-ranged and more accurate las-gun packing a somewhat stronger punch than usual. After thirty-two weeks of basic training, and piles of paperwork for the Administorum, the Fifty-Second is now ready to engage the enemies of the Imperium across the blighted landscape of the divided Milky Way in His glorious name!
Okie dokie, firstly welcome, now I'm going to try and make this as short as I can. I have no rules (minus the obvious ones commonly used throughout most role-plays) apart from notifying me/a co-GM of either an extended absence or if you intend to leave. This is simply so I can carry on and know who is where and so on and so forth. Right... The only other thing is probably initiative, meaning the initiative of players; while not an entirely sandbox experience, I do like players to think for themselves. I shall be guiding things along but 'in the field' so-to-speak I do find it acceptable for players to forge ahead, as long as it doesn't damage the overall plot. For example, you're in a village and get ambushed โ€“ now I'm happy for their to be as many enemies as you wish to kill, for the players to pretty much defeat the enemy as they see fit, and to ultimately carry the day, so long as they don't carry it beyond that. If in doubt about what you can and can't get away with, just ask me. It makes things much easier. On the issue of Character Sheets, I don't want any, however what I will ask is for each player to just post up the basics of their character in the following format;
Name: Age: Gender: Former Profession: Rank: Specialisation:
That's all. Almost everyone will also be starting as a simple soldier, though some may have a little more experience than others. The highest rank is likely to be Sergeant, so if you'd like a higher rank (not that it will make much difference IC), please give me a message. I believe that's it (for now), so if you do have any questions or queries then feel more than free to ask. This was duly done, the uninhabited planet swiftly becoming less so, the hardy colonists transforming the Earth-like world into a unique planet made to suit their own needs. During the 'Old Night', or Age of Strife (from what surviving records can tell), Uzania suffered as much as any other world on the 25th to 30th Millennia, being isolated by warpstorms and isolated from the galaxy at large much as the Throneworld itself was during this period. Psykers abound, mutation was rampant, and Chaos seeped into everything...nevertheless, Uzania survived and even thrived. It was only after the events of the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy that Uzania Prime was rediscovered, one of several planets (the other being more minor planetoids) in the Uzania System, and the only inhabited world as far as anyone knew. Uzania had developed by itself, using pre-Old Night technology as best they could, but not being able to develop past what the Imperium would call a 'civilised' state without Imperial intervention - it nevertheless proved to be a perfect breeding ground for formations of the Astra Militarum, the soldiers of the planet having retained a warrior ethos and organisation inherited from generations of forebearers all the way back to the rugged highlanders and mountain folk of their far-distant past. As in many cultures over time, the majority of the Uzania military had been recruited from the 'savage' and 'uncivilised' mountain-dwellers and forest-folk of the central nations of Uzania - the planet being split between the many biomes therein, and containing a variety of peoplea and ways of life - the whole structure taking on a distinctly backward flavour under the guidance of ten generations of 'Kaisers' or Emperors from similar backgrounds. With the coming of the God-Emperors representatives, Imperial officials escorted by Guard protection, a war came to the peoples of Uzania Prime that try as they might they just could not winc - and win they did not. In the end, after three decades of ferocious conflict spanning the breadth of the planet, the leaders of the Uzania nations agreed to form into a unified entity under the aegis of the Imperium of Man, and the only Emperor they would know would be the 'Gott-Kaiserรณn his golden throne and the Planetary-Governor assigned from a number of rotated royal houses on the planet.

The very first regiment of what were to become the Uzanian (1st) Rifles - crack shots and expert all-terrain soldiers, raised primarily in the most rugged landscapes of Uzania Prime, and clad in their distinctive caps and grey flak-lined uniforms, - was founded from the first planetary tithe to partake in a little-known conflict of the the 7th Black Crusade, known in some sectors as the Ghost War. Proving themselves capable of adaptable soldiers, the planet has since raised over fifty more regiments for the Imperium - not as many as larger worlds, but more than enough for a planet and population of their size and place in the wider galaxy. Characterised by their uniform, their battle-cant that is a corrupted form of the original Jermani language, and their specialisation of fighting in more extreme environments, the Uzanians have proven themselves a hundred times over across multiple theatres of war and against most enemies of the Imperium. Whether the 52nd Rifles can continue this reputation remains to be seen, but if anything it is certain they will do their utmost...or die trying.
