Age
24
[s]Role
The dude who gets to be unhorsed so the lords can look cool. (Actually none)
[/s] Characterization
Mace was one of the many baseborn street urchins of Oldtown once, and has spent his entire life trying to break through the layers of society. Being lucky enough for a group of Acolytes to take in as gopher boy, his lifelong thirst for knowledge was ignited, and he too desired to become one of the maesters. Hard-working and motivated to a fault, he managed to attain reluctant recognition for his efforts earning the chains of healing (silver) and mathematics (yellow-gold) over the course of several years. However he grew also oblivious to the negative feelings of jealousy this sparked in fellow acolytes, and he suffered sabotage attempts on trying to get his third link - warcraft. Hopeless and fed up against the unseen but ever present differences in birthright, Mace decided to leave Oldtown and settle down as a smallfolk barber somewhere in the seven kingdoms. The chance encounter of a hedge knight in need of his services changed his mind, and as he tended to the wounds of the windblown knight, he gained a newfound interest in the strength or arms. True, hedge knights had sometimes miserable conditions that made them little different than brigands, but there was at least a glimmer of recognition in their ways - a small thread which one could raise status in society as much as by becoming a maester. Mace made his mind, and asked to be squired. The knight agreed, as he was of good disposition and earning a squire skilled in healing was a good thing. The odd partnership went for a couple of years, before a chill finally took the knight to the Stranger's arms, and in his deathbed knighted the young Mace. Since then, he has wandered the lands much like his master. A mixture of cynicism and goodwill in his actions, he acknowledges that good deeds must be done in this world, but sometimes it is not practical to do so. While he is untested in big tournaments, he is hopeful the bouts at Gulltown might change that. His appearance is rather unremarkable, being of average height and build, with plain to no decorations on his armor, save his coat of arms, a Sword and a Book. He owns also a brown rounsey with no particular features, only that it has been trained to be summoned by Mace's whistling.
Attributes & Talents

Disbeliever of Dreams: Mace has always struggled to reconcile the imperfections of this world with hope in a better tomorrow, and it more than often has tinted his mood a heavy shade of grey. Seldom he will believe in any kind of hollow ideal, and he is a throughout cynic. If something is probably too good to be true, it probably is. As such, he is very wary of diplomacy and well-curtailed speeches, and prefers blunt truths which convey more information per sentence. This has led to avoid as much possible people who thrive on it, such as the Faith of the Seven (which he has to uphold as annointed knight) and excessively corteous environments.
Shield of the Dispossesed: That being said, there's a small stubborn idealistic ember embedded deep within himself he admits he can never fully shake off. He's no stranger to misery, oppression and the thumb of the Game mucking everything up. As a former street urchin, he spares the brunt of the harshness of the world to those who resemble what he was once in the past: Children and Smallfolk.
Annointed Knight: Mace has taken his training to heart, and he's competent in warfare and knightly duties. While not a child prodigy trained from birth, he can perform well enough to have to worry little about his life as long as the odds aren't stacked too much against him in a battlefield.
Knight of the Mind: Yet for all knightly exploits, if one were to scratch the surface, one would find that Mace's closer to a Maester in mindset than to a knight. Even though his lifelong dream was denied by the societal gap between nobility and baseborn, his mind is as sharp and inquisitive as ever, and his intellectual acumen is beyond doubt. He grasps abstract concepts quickly and knows how to process information well. The links he earned in Healing and Economics give him an extra edge when it comes to survivability of himself and his associates and business ventures, and the studies he attained in warcraft before he was sabotaged make him a surprisingly competent if untested war commander.
Plain: Mace's face is pretty unremarkable, and often registers as just a background figure when more charismatic people take the stage. While this makes slightly difficult for people to remember his past deeds and services, it works both ways, as he is sometimes beneath notice unless he does something to warrant attention.

Immediate Family
Not applicable (Orphan)
Personal Relations
House Hightower - Mace has seen sometimes the lords of Oldtown strutting around, but has no personal relationship with any of them. Still, being a citizen of Oldtown he has a slightly favorable view of them. Better the evil that you know.
Storyline Premise
Mace is a freelance agent. Someone who hopes to gain something out of the Game of Thrones, or at least survive to reach an old age. His allegiance and true goals are rather hard to assess at any given point.
