Zack himself was never much of a drinker, at least not as much as his friend John was. If Zack was alone he might have stuck with his plan of not consuming anything offered by his host, let alone asking for something, but when he performed that ritual during his occult phase, John's soul got absorbed into him.

With words that weren't his own, he asked "You got any beer?"

It wasn't Zacks will to ask this. It was like he was just controlled by someone else, which he sort of was.
