Ok that sounds good to me. If it's at Akiva's village maybe that's why they're shapeshifters too. The object gives them quite a bit of power (I imagine shapeshifting to be a rather advanced move) so when it gets taken away her powers weaken so much that she can barely perform basic spells since she's not used to not having the added boost of the object.
