During labor, his mother was attacked by the vampire Deacon Frost. Although she did not survive, Eric did and was raised by friends and his childhood was as ordinary as it could be given the circumstances. That changed when he encountered jazz musician Jamal Afari and rescued him from vampires who were overwhelming him. Then, Eric realized that he was much different from other children and began training under Afari to hunt vampires. As he matured into adulthood Brooks left home to travel the world and bring an end to the vampire threat, particularly that of Deacon Frost who killed his mother. On the side, he worked as hired muscle and became known as Blade by those who encountered him on a professional level due to his effective utilization of a sword. At some point, a global disaster struck and ruined civilization on Earth. With mankind heavily weakened, fiends such as vampires and demons came out of the woodwork to take advantage and prey on the planet's vulnerable population. It was during this period that Blade formed a group known as the Bloodshadows to fight against the fiends and together the group played a key role in helping humanity survive long enough to rebuild. Unfortunately, the Bloodshadows were wiped out by a powerful vampire named Lamia who Blade barely managed to defeat, losing his left arm and right eye in the fight. With the Bloodshadows defeated the Vampire Houses were able to reorganize and gain power. Blade, scarred by the lost of his entire organization, went into hiding. In some of these mega cities, the Vampire Houses have established themselves as ruling nobility and have oppressed humans, harvesting them for blood.
