The goal of this RP is to create a custom Magic: The Gathering set, of roughly 250-300 cards, and play out the story for that set as an RP at the same time. Players may be creating multiple characters, and controlling characters made by others depending on the circumstances, though players will be able to have central characters only they control. The general idea is that we'll plan out the events we want to happen, and the characters we want to include, then we'll start roleplaying out those events, with them being represented on cards either before or after we've done the roleplaying depending on if we want the story to fit the cards, or vice versa. All players must participate in both the roleplaying and set-creation aspects of this RP. Because we are trying to create a functional, and at least semi-balanced set, I want to get some background on the players who are joining. Instead of applying with a character sheet, you'll need to fill out the following designer sheet:
What's Your History With Magic?: how did you get into the game, what set did you start with, what formats do you play, etc. Favorite Set and why?: Favorite Mechanic and why?: specifically, non-evergreen mechanics. Favorite Card and why?: What's Your Favorite Aspect of Magic?: as in the brand as a whole, not necessarily just the game and its mechanics. What's Your Least Favorite Aspect of Magic?: How Much Experience Do You Have With Making Custom Magic Cards?: Design a Custom Mechanic: Design Five Custom Cards: This must include a mythic, a rare, an uncommon, and two commons. At least 3 colors and 3 different card types must be used. Feel free to use any custom card website or program to make these, though MtG Set Editor is preferred. If you put art on your cards, credit the artist. If you wish, you can just write out your cards as text instead. What kinds of worlds would you most want to explore? What sort of stories would you most want to tell in this RP?
If you wish to join, simply fill out the designer sheet and post it. There will be no player limit. Feel free to throw any questions or concerns you might have at me, I'll try to answer them as quickly as possible. Here's my designer sheet as an example:
What's Your History With Magic? I first learned about magic in 2008, and picked up the bant preconstructed deck from Shards of Alara. Didn't actually learn how to play until around Dragons of Tarkir. I generally play commander and limited formats, and tend to stay away from most competetive constructed formats. Favorite Set and why? Shards of Alara, even though it was released before I learned how to play, will always stick with me. I love the mechanics, the art, the flavor. Basically, everything about that set is what I want out of magic. Granted, it's not perfect, as only 3 of 5 mechanics were actually mechanics, but I still love it. Favorite Mechanic and why? Exalted. I love it for how simple, yet effective it is. I've tried to convince myself that other mechanics are better, but not of them speak to me the way exalted does. Favorite Card and why? This has definitely changed over time. In terms of art and flavor, Sensation gorger is probably my pick. The art is one of my favorites, even though the card itself isn't the greatest thing in the world. It will always have a place in my Krenko commander deck. What's Your Favorite Aspect of Magic? I just really enjoy how the game is structured, both mechanically and narratively. I'll speak on the narrative aspect, since the mechanical aspect is something I assume everyone appreciates. The set up of the multiverse makes a perfect space to explore in a set-based card game. Every world can be distinct, and we can see fresh characters develop within these unique settings. The inclusion of interplanar travel and planeswalkers allows for throughlines to connect these stories, of course. Though, I do feel that the way WotC has gone about it abuses that aspect of the game's narrative structure, and ignores the multiverse's strengths. What's Your Least Favorite Aspect of Magic? In terms of the brand as a whole, the characters. Specifically the focus on super-powerful but completely bland planeswalkers, and the cartoonish take on our lead villains. Bolas isn't a threat, he's a joke. None of the characters have personality flaws, they're all blank one-note marketing tools. In terms of the game itself? The obvious focus on money over making a good game. Judges have to pay to be judges now, the card quality is worse, the packs are getting more expensive, and we're getting pricey special edition packs on top of everything. How Much Experience Do You Have With Making Custom Magic Cards? I've been designing custom cards for about as long as I've been playing the game actively. I did work on a custom set about 3 years ago in this exact same style, though the project was eventually dropped. Design a Custom Mechanic Cache: this is an ability word that means "exile the target card face down. It's owner may place it on top of their library at any time." What sort of stories would you most want to tell in this RP? Currently, I'm not really sure what I want. I'm mostly interested in hearing ideas from others and bouncing them around. I would like to have more of a focus on non-planeswalker characters at the very least.
