On a side note, there is one concept i'd toss out there to make a shapeshifter naturally possible. Not necessarily a flying one, but it's merely food for thought. 

Say a race lives in an area rich in magical energy, grew up in the area which might be more toxic to other natural life that doesn't live there. Say this magic has mage them being inherently "irradiated" with, "naturally absorbing" magical energy, or even "producing" magical energy as a by-product of their existence. Or something of the sort. 

Then when they get into an intense enough emotional state, their bodies transform temporarily into some other kind of "demonic" or "magically induced" form as a survival mechanism. It would be something that'd take a heck of a long time before they'd learn to control it, as in they'd have to be civilized and working ardently on it, but this was just a thought in the end. XD
