It brought her comfort in the long nights she would be stuck awake and unable to fall back asleep. Instead of despising the night, she had grown to embrace it. Most of the world was asleep now or starting to be, therefore she usually went out and would go for walks. People warned her most of the time not to, then once learned it was falling on deaf ears, had stopped. She wasn't afraid of the night or what it held. To her, the world was her oyster and she would live it how she pleased. While strolling down the street, Corvina noticed a dark haired man glance backwards at her. She shrugged it off. Her sweatshirt, black leggings along with her tan boots, looked out of the ordinary and she didn't mind. In her pockets though, she carried mace, her phone and had a switchblade as well. She was unafraid of the night but had run into a few drunkards who had thought she was easy prey and had soon come to learn that she was not. As the breeze picked up and blew her hair into her face, she scowled and quickly tied it up. She glanced up a t the sky with a frown. Well-versed with meteorology and science, Cora had come to love and pay attention to the weather. She knew it was out of the ordinary. Corvina began to glance around as the air thinned, then began to vibrate around them. She rubbed her eyes and bit her lip, baffled. What was happening? She saw the dark haired man confused too. At least I'm not the only one seeing this. I am not going crazy. Unexpectedly, as out of a movie, a rift randomly appeared. Cora gawked at it and began to peddle backwards. She had read about folklore and enough fiction to know a rift was never a good sign. She watched as vacuum and debris were being sucked up as if it were a black hole trying to swallow Earth whole. The man yelled at her to watch out but to no use; they were both sucked up. Cora let out a shrill yelp of fear and anxiety as she was pulled into it, along with the man. As quickly as the rift had opened and sucked her in, it spat her out. She let out a cry of pain as her head smacked onto the ground and caused stars to dance across her vision. She wasn't positive, but she thought she had felt debris clunk her in the head as well. The blur of foliage in front of her was unlike anything Cora had seen or studied. She tried to move, to call for help. Certainly that man was nearby her, right? Or was he sucked up elsewhere? She moaned and tried to sit up but a heaviness in her head prevented her. She growled and grit her teeth as she forced herself onto her hands and feet. She was not going to just lay God knew where and be left for dead. She glanced around as the world spun around her and caused her stomach to churn. She didn't see the street lamps, houses, or even the pavement. No, she was in some Godforsaken forest. She heaved for a moment, then crawled over a few feet and stopped. Cora growled, irritated by the change of events, though uncertain if she was dreaming. She thought she saw an animal up ahead, but wasn't able to confirm it as everything went black.
- - - - - - - -- - - - - - -
When Cora's eyes opened, she found the man kneeling beside her and a woman. The man looked human but the woman beside him had extremely pointed ears. Before she could process it, bile churned in her stomach and burned her throat. She rolled onto her side away from the two and spat it out, then coughed. Shit, that was so gross... Cora dabbed at her out with some tissues from her pocket and set them back. If anything, it made her more nauseous. She looked to the side and vaguely saw the distinct silhouettes of her switchblade and mace. Cora reached for them both with numb fingers and looked up at the women as Cora registered her voice and speech. A cold sweat engulfed her and she found the hairs on the back of her neck raising. Their kind? What did she mean? Cora's mind raced with more questions than her finals caused her. "What the heck are you talking about? She glanced around at the man, whom now she realized had been inquiring if she was all right. "I'm fine," she muttered pushing herself up onto her elbows and tried to sit up but her vision swayed and she leaned back down. She gritted her teeth and rubbed her eyes with her shoulder. She hated being a damsel in distress. Not only that, but she did not want to show weakness when the situation was so out of context for her. This was something out of her fiction novels. She loved them but she had not wanted to live in them in the literal sense. "Really, I'm peachy." She paused, then added with concern, "Are you okay? I don't think we are in Kansas anymore." Cora kept the women in her line of vision, and one hand on her mace and the other on her switchblade. She wasn't sure who this man was, but he was comforting in the sense that he, like her, was baffled. That, and also he was human too. This woman was clearly not. Cora tried to calm her breathing but her body was trembling. It took her a few moments to realize the debris in her hair had also pierced a small fragment of her skull and caused blood to cascade down her back. Cora touched the back of her hand and paled more. "On my favorite supreme sweatshirt, oh no." Cora moaned to herself.
