I really liked all the detail in your post too. It was really easy to picture everything you wrote about.

And not at all! "Straw house" is circus slang for full house. Comes from the history of older circuses getting so crowded, they had to lay down straw for the overflow to sit on during the performances when they ran out of seats :)
I'm pretty sure occupancy codes don't allow that kind of seating anymore, but the term stuck, haha.
