Alternate timeline is probably an effective way of describing it. Basically, there have been no characters from canon and no events from canon. You could say the entire roleplay has been retconned all the way back to the mysterious foundings of each village, which do have stories, but won't be elaborated upon. 

Aburame clan was wiped out mostly because the Hiden involved with its jutsu were lost and its members were easily identified and slaughtered. Mass genocide almost wiped out all clans in general.
