He's smarter than everyone else, more talented than everyone else, more charming than everyone else, and, of course, more important than everyone else. Naturally, this makes him grating to interact with, especially relating to matters that he's actually talented in. Condescension is common, as is frequent whining when the harsh realities of life at sea contrast too heavily with his pampered tastes. Nevertheless, his showing of blunt disdain is usually a sign that he's comfortable with a person, as he tends to stick to courtly double-speak weaved into a facade of politeness when dealing with people he's unsure of. He tries to carry himself with a dignified air regardless of circumstance; he's just as haughty wading through a sewer as he is roaming the halls of a nobleman's manor, though this is mostly an effort to place himself above everyone else around him. Nevertheless, when his composure does crack, he devolves into a whiny mess, throwing complaint after complaint until someone solves the issue of his displeasure like a spoiled child.
History
Born as the heir apparent to a prominent military family, Renault spent his childhood being groomed into an ideal naval officer. As such, he was drilled on a variety of subjects throughout his childhood; tactics, navigation, cartography, magic, swordplay, marksmanship; anything that could be valuable to his position. Prepped for perfection, Renault seemed to be in good standing to inherit House LaFontaine's fleet during his early life. Unfortunately, despite all his instruction in etiquette and courtly procedure, Renault was not without controversy. His inflated self-importance often led to him rubbing people the wrong way, which, while excusable when he was younger, became a point of contention for those he'd offended as he grew older and continued these behaviors. This came to a head during what should've been a simple arranged marriage between him and the eldest daughter of another prominent House, which resulted in him unapologetically offending not only his betrothed, but several of her relatives and their magnificent battleships as well. Renault's more politically savvy younger brother took advantage of the situation to improve his own standing, and Renault ended up veritably disowned by his father to avoid open hostilities between the two houses. Left to his own devices without the wealth and brown-nosing servants he was accustomed to, Renault was forced to earn a living in the only place his skills were useful - onboard a ship. The local navy wouldn't take him, given his disgraced status, but private vessels looking for spare hands rarely vetted their hires very hard. Bouncing from crew to crew, whether because he annoyed the hell out of everyone else on board or he found a way to exploit his family name or talents for a better position elsewhere, Renault gradually worked out a fanciful and grandiose plan to take back his rightful place as a pampered rich guy. Expect it to end very badly.

Weapons

A Flask of Water - Exactly as the name implies, a small glass bottle of water. While the flask itself may be unextraordinary, it serves as an ideal base for the formation of weaponized water constructs, such as a pressurized mass of water that rapidly cycles in the shape of a sword for optimum cutting power.

Cutlass - A mundane cutlass with a fairly simplistic handguard, like the kind some magically-illiterate peasant might use, in the unlikely event that masterful application of a handheld waterjet just can't get the job done.
Magic

Hydromancy - Anyone can yell at the sea, but getting the sea to answer is real talent. Ren's skillset covers the more basic utility spells like water-breathing and -walking or desalination of seawater, as well as the more dramatic manipulation of water, usually to violent effect. He's capable of shaping and manipulating intricate or complex structures out of water on a small scale, but has to rely on simple brute force tactics when commanding larger quantities of water, which can be quite exhausting.
