He has connections to those at the edge between this world and others, known as ”The dwellers” or "edgers" or "rimmers" or what you want to call the, that he can ask for guide on paranormal rumors and guide. He has some street knowledge on how to get to the other side or what awaits there. Deeper you go, harder it is to know nothing but rumors if not even that. Arsene has been lucky twice in his life and gotten hands on two artifacts. One is a horn from a lowly demon, capable to corrupt and disturb magic, but it's already losing it's power. Second one is amulet of Tyr, won from a card game. Protective runes are written on the golden coin's edge. Whispering them aloud creates a push of force that he can use to repel enemies or push foes away. But that too is for escape purposes, not for serious fights. Writing Sample:
It was high noon on a cloudless sky. You could go to a beach to lay back, enjoy the heat along with some ice cream or some cold beer. Even on such a sunny day there were places where the sun didn't shine. For example inside the subway in New York, beyond places where the common public don't want to go and isn't even allowed. Not that Arsene would be either, but there does live people. Those who knew about them didn't care to bother them. Police and guards had more important things to worry about and waste resources at and thus made rarely visits to the tunnels under subway. The tunnel that Arsene wandered in was dark expect for few weak fluorescent tubes giving shine the brick walls that had been filled with graffiti long time ago, after metro had stopped driving here. Further down the smell started to have piss and faeces on it. Sewer was close and on such a hot day the water seemed to evaporate. Like a foul breath of a beast living in a dark cave. Arsene and other dwellers welcomed such smell. At the edge many had heard of them realms compared to which this was paradise. Arsene was about to meet Peg-leg John, who had been to such a realm and came back leaving his left leg behind. Arsene slowed down as cardboard houses filled with dirty blankets and broken dreams started to make appearance. He casually put his hand on his jacket's pocket, feeling the Horn in his fingertips. Just to be sure. One such box went away, the another. A shopping cart full of junk and a dirty woman looking with suspicion, gripping her dagger hard if Arsene tried to grab anything. Past that he looked at the pile of blankets with a junkie looking to worlds non-existing. Few more meters and he saw a familiar wooden log attached to a man in his early thirties. Peg-Leg John, or Peg as few knew him, was Arsene's acquittance from year or two ago. His sideburns were as non-combed as ever, dark strings on his cheeks curling unlike his hair. His eyes had red on them. Seems he'd been drinking. As he saw Arsene, he rose. His navy jacket, gotten probably from salvation army, had burn marks on it. ”Fancy seeing old mates” Said Peg. ”Dying breed, them. You got the message.” ”Got... The message. Are there others coming?” He asked. ”Jolene or... Knack for example?” ”Knack's a goner. Ran out of medicine so he poured gasoline on himself and lighted up before... You know”. Peg said. Arsene looked uncomfortably to the tunnel. Just a thought gave him shivers. Bloody parasite. ”Jolene went to Quebec, last I heard. But we have a new kid. Marc. College kid, naive still and bold like us when we were young lads. He gets some chemicals. Old style alchemy, y'know. Whatever came from that portal, some cursed platinum amulet melted in regal water should do the trick.” Peg continued. Arsene's shoulders got bit tense while looking around. ”You got the beast's location?” ”Aye. Location spell. Got the finger from the poor bastard that summoned the beast and was then eaten by it.” Peg said and took the middle finger of a poor sob from his pocket. Arsene shivered a bit upon seeing it. ”Two days it's been nesting at southern tunnel. Heard the locals edgers there have moved away. Marc's already there waiting for us. We're going?” Peg asked. Arsene bit his lips and rubbed his nose. Though they had melt platinum with curse on it, exact nature of the beast was unknown. So hopefully they could feed it the melted charm and then salvage the ribs, tentacles, blood, arcana, whatever the beast had to offer from it's remains. There was value in these things even if risk was moderate. So he nodded, rubbed his cursed horn in his pocket with his thumb as a lucky charm and said ”Lead the way.” They walked good seven hundred meters in the tunnel complexes, following the finger that Peg kept on his hand. He was excited about this adventure, talking about plans. ”Distract it with that amulet of yours and run around at the abandoned station. They got old metro abandoned metro cart there where we can take cover if things get hairy, and that could be the place to keep the beast in. No manoeuvring if it's a doggie.” ”You brought one of them seeds?” Arsene asked and his disappointment was quite visible as Peg shook his head. ”Got only five. Don't want to feed one of them for some beastie, you know? We got the cursed and melted platinum anyway. If I get some blood, I can grow them seeds into... Divine... ” Peg ended suddenly and slowed down, few hundreds away from the supposed nest. In front of them they saw some blood. Arsene instinctively took a hold from his amulet and looked around, waiting for an attack. Both listened closely but only silence and dripping water answered them. They got more serious about this quest now. Peg took slowly steps forward. A hollow clonk echoed with each step his wooden leg hit the bricks on the floor. Arsene followed next to him, both of them trailing the blood and looking anxiously at their surroundings. Forty meters they followed the trail of blood. They saw claw marks of someone trying to grasp into anything, ripped cardboard boxes, torn blankets and sights of fighting along the way. Then they found pieces of glass vial and a cork along with dark red liquid on the ground, bubbling. Peg knelt and sniffed at the liquid and the steams it evaporated. Arsene knew the answer already, but begged Peg would say anything else. ”Royal water... And platinum.” Peg said, looking at Arsene and him returning the gaze. Both then heard sounds in between the water dripping. Ripping, sucking, having a smack of bites. Peg and Arsene both lost blood from their faces, but still they slowly turned their heads towards the sound. Hundred meters further would be an abandoned subway station where the beast's nest would be. But only fifty meter in front of them they saw a limp body. Fluorescent light was blinking. Between the flashes they saw a man in bloodstained clothes. It was being devoured by a long, smooth, red tube with a mouth at the end, taking pieces out of him. The tentacle, feeding tube, whatever it was, had at least 20 meters length. It's other end, dear god, was hidden in the darkness further towards the station. The sucking, biting, breaking of bones and tearing of flesh were still in echoing through the tunnels as they slowly took steps backwards away from the horrific scene. As they got behind the corner and picked up speed, they could still hear the beast tasting it's latest meal.
