Being a Djinn of fire, he tends to run hot and thus forgoes a shirt underneath his coat allowing his natural heat to keep him warm. If he does wear a shirt, he chooses light weight fabrics. The black gloves he wears protect his palms when manipulating the ropes on the ship and his jewelry is exclusively gold to show off his succus as a pirate. At his side he carries a scimitar, a curved dagger, and knife kept in his boot, all which have intricate and decorative golden hilts.
Personality:
Once Aodh is with a captain he respects his loyalty is deep, he will sail with that person and crew to the ends of the world, and so long as their judgement is sound, he doesn’t mind not mind facing hard times. Having faced hard times before he knows very well that the tides turn easily and in this respect he can be patient. There are few lines he won’t cross, and will freely voice his concerns, and any leader who asks him to go against his own code losses his respect. He walks the line between selflessness and selfishness, as pirate taking what he needs comes natural but he can also be generous towards others when he has something to spare. While cruelty is part of being a pirate, he is not unnecessarily cruel. He will not kill just for the killing but will be ruthless in battle when it’s called for. There is necessity to maintain one’s reputation for ferocity as a pirate, but Aodh looks for a way to balance this with abiding by his own moral code. Those who surrender are spared, prisoners are treated justly, and children and innocent women are never harmed by his hand. Although self-preservation is important to Aodh, he loathes cowardice, and protecting his captain and crew come before himself. Like many Djinn of fire, he is ruled by passion. Aodh has a quick and short temper but not every fight is too the death, he will not hesitate to engage those who anger him and being a pirate means that your life and livelihood depend on one’s reputation. Those who provoke him will feel his wrath and anyone who goes after the crew will see no mercy. He prefers to solve minor disputes with a fight but afterwards he gets over things quickly. In battle he gives himself over to ferocity, fighting for his life and the lives of those he sails with. His bravery comes from having already lived a number of years, and the belief that there is no better death than going out fighting. Aodh would rather fall in battle than be taken alive to face the noose. As Djinn his life is longer than most and patience comes easily to him but at the same time his passionate nature makes it more natural for him to act quickly. Without a leader Aodh follows his whims, doing whatever he first thinks of and fighting his way out when he has to, but with direction he can follow a plan and lie in wait. Coming from a more modest background formal education was not available to him, but what he has is a great deal of sailing experience. He picks things up quickly and his knowledge all comes from hands on experience which he views as more valuable than anything learned from books. Although he is charismatic, he is also a very divisive personality. Not everyone gets along with someone so fervent and prone to being hot headed. His energy level is almost always extremely high, when there is downtime from his own duties aboard the ship, he will find someone else who needs help with their work. At port he plays hard, finding himself drink, women, and gambling to keep his time occupied and very rarely takes time to truly rest. Aodh is quick to laugh or make a joke when the situation is appropriate, serious only when there is work that needs done or in tough battles.
History: Born the youngest son of a pirate, a fire Djinn, and a bar maiden, an earth Djinn, Aodh inherited both his fathers love of adventure on the open seas and his mystical traits as a fire Djinn. Aodh’s fondest memories of his father were watching him leave for the seas and longing to be there with him. He dreamed of the adventure his father surely knew on the high seas, and listened with intensity to the stories his older brother and the other pirates that visited Sunken Reef Isle, the island he called home, would tell. They lived a modest but free life among the thieves and vagrants there, and Aodh new nothing but freedom for most of his childhood. His older brother, Callen, soon left home to join his father, a Quartermaster, as a cabin boy upon the Siren’s Embrace. His father ship was sailing close to home with a successful bounty before it was overtaken by a navy ship. His father died a pirates death at sea but his brother was captured by the navy and taken to Glasston to face trail. His mother, his sister, and Aodh, traveled to the large continent to plead for his brothers release and here Aodh got his first taste of what life was like under the rule of a king. His mother spent what little money they had trying to save his brothers life but despite her best efforts Callen was found guilty of piracy. His last memory of his brother was watching him hang through the spaces between his mother’s fingers as she tried to shield him from the image. They then lacked the funds to return to their home and made due living in poverty on Glasston. It was here that Aodh believes his mother truly died of broken heart; after such a loss she was never the same person again. She worked in a brothel until illness took what was left of her life. Aodh survived by working as a kitchen boy and through theft, while sister married young to a local farmer. Unlike Aodh she chose an honest life, or a comfortable cage as he calls it, to avoid the wrath of the law. Eventually Aodh was caught stealing and sold into slavery as punishment. He bounced around for a while until being conscripted to a navy ship. At first he was excited to finally be on the seas as he had always dreamed but naval life was much harder for him than he had anticipated. Aodh’s adolescent frame was expected to do some of the most grueling work of the ship and when he found himself too weak from exhaustion he was beaten. Over time he strengthened, grew from a scrawny boy until and muscled young man from the hard labor until the day finally came when he was freed from his slavery. As pirates attacked the ship he used the first opportunity to turn against the navy that held him captive and join the pirates, proving that he was no naval dog when he killed the first mate of that naval ship himself, slicing his throat of the man who so often beat him, with a kitchen knife. When he introduced himself as the son of the pirate Ignatius Cyrus, this crew took him on as one of their own. Aboard a ship called the Howling Raider he finally learned what he needed to become an adapt sailor. Working hard in the kitchen as assistant to the cook, a job he loathed, but made sure to do well in order to gain respect as hard worker. Any free time he had was spent with the other sailors learning how their jobs were done so he could work his way out of the kitchen. The ships boatswain taught him much about sailing and navigation, the master gunner taught him the workings of the cannons and combat, and this ships captain showed him that there were some leaders out their who earned their position and respect. As fire Djinn he found himself suited to working with the cannons as a gunner. He bounced around to different crews when he could find a captain he respected for the next hundred plus years of his life. He watched as the ships and the weapons change and develop just as the rest of the world around him did. He saw the world through his travels and became a respected pirate in his own right, feeling like he had finally done enough to carry on his family name. He continues to yearn for adventure, seeking out anything that makes him feel most alive for he knows that a pirate's life is normally short and very few retire.
Personality:
Cold and detached towards others, Sylas speaks very little, he was raised to never speak out of turn and social attachments were seen as weakness. He lives to further the family name, to work hard, and to be strong. Weakness, in his family, was never tolerated, and to Sylas emotions and attachments are weakness. All those who rank above him are treated with respect, his orders are never questioned but simply obeyed. Those who rank below him are given orders and he does not seek out social interacts with the crew, they are all there to work and serve captain and country not to have fun. Raised for service in the navy, Sylas knows his life is disposable, if he must die for Glasston then he will. He was never allowed to indulge in his own desires, and simply has no idea how to be selfish. When given an order he will obey and achieve through any means necessary. In battle he is ruthless, mercy and empathy are weakness to him, and he will not fall prey to weakness. There is no need to protect others of the crew, if they cannot handle themselves in battle then they deserve to fall, unless his orders are otherwise. Sylas exists in a fragile emotional state, although he expects the same calmness and indifference his father always shows of himself, this is difficult for him to achieve. He is constantly hyper aware of his surroundings, struggling to control himself and exude strength. He only allows himself to let loose in battle, to lose control and unleash rage upon his enemies. Fear and anxiety constantly hold him back, fear of weakness and of disappointing others who hold authority over him. Although he may appear brave to others, this is because he was raised with the belief that his own life holds no value until he earns it. His value is based in his ability to serve Glasston, as long as he is a valuable sailor to king and country, he has earned his place. Therefor a coward’s life, one unable to sacrifice and follow orders, holds no value. One day he hopes to achieve the heights his father has, to captain his own ship and at that point he thinks he will truly hold value, until then he exists to be a solider. Raised in a wealthy and aristocratic military family Sylas is well educated but lacks the confidence to think for himself. Structure and orders are all he knows and without that he is lost. He walks with flawless posture, and holds himself with coldness that most find intimidating, this along with his quiet and unfriendly nature is enough to keep most people away. Humor is lost on him, especially sarcasm as Sylas takes things at face value. His energy is certainly weakened by the sun, as a dark elf he is most energized in darkness, but his high endurance allows him to push through in most situations. Sylas does not quit until his body quits for him, during work and in battle. His sanity is questionable, as a man forged by trauma he constantly struggles internally. His value is something he must constantly earn and prove; he puts unreasonably high expectations upon himself and when he does not live up to them, he punishes himself. Sleep does not come easy to him and he suffers from terrible dreams based in what he endured as a child. Sylas keeps himself in a constant state of repression and isolation under the belief that these things will eventually strengthen him.
History: Sylas comes from a wealthy elvish family with impeccable breading, he is the eldest son and thus the highest of expectations were thrust upon him. His father, just like the vast majority of the men in his family, is proud serving member of the Glasston Navy. Sylas has been trained for service since as far back as he can remember, as are his younger twin brothers, Caspian and Cedric. His sister, as the women of his family are, was raised to be a proper lady, and her marriage is to be arranged by their father. Sylas’s family is the picture-perfect image of Glasston aristocracy but as idyllic as his life may have looked to the poor, the reality was much darker. Sylas’s father, Declan, was a cruel and controlling man who placed an enormous amount of pressure and responsibility on a Sylas at a very young age. While his minor indiscretions, such as sneezing when he was to be quiet, poor posture, or setting the dinner table incorrectly, where punished through corporal means, when he truly disappointed his father the naval captain would dream up a variety of mental anguishes for his son to suffer through. Once weakness had been properly beaten out of his son, Declan charged Sylas with punishing the servant’s indiscretions, preparing him to be ready to kill at the drop of a hat should the King require it. Captain Declan Fyn was not raising sons, but training what he believed would be perfect soldiers for the King’s navy. Weakness and emotions were not tolerated, and to be able to survive his upbringing Sylas adapted to this environment. He strived and pushed himself to be something his father could be proud of but has yet to get an inkling of approval from the cold man who raised him. Even at his proudest moment, when Sylas left home, a full-fledged solider of the navy, to serve his first tour, he found nothing but impassive coldness from his father. So, Sylas tried harder, to be a great sailor, he worked hard aboard the first vessel he was stationed at. In battle he found it easier to detach and do what was necessary than many of the other new recruits, he killed without hesitation, truly ruthless in battle finding the one place where he could unleash all his pent-up rage and frustration. He caught the attention of that boat’s first mate, who saw a streak of remarkable cruelty in the boy and trained him in ‘interrogation techniques.’ He worked his way up the ranks until, along the way he was rewarded by his superiors for viciousness and cruelty and so it was that these qualities within him strengthened. He began to enjoy torturing prisoners, they were nothing more than filthy pirates after all, and by the time he returned home from his first tour he was the spitting image of his father. Sylas Fyn had grown from eager and nervous boy into a cold and battle-hardened man. Still he saw no pride in his father’s eyes, there was nothing that man carried about except his own glory, and finally Sylas began to realize the best he could hope for was to not disappoint his father. His obsessive nature made the position of boatswain a good fit for him, he kept meticulous records of supplies, and his rationing abilities often saved his captains a fair amount of coin. While his work aboard vessels was impeccable, he never could bond well with the crew. Sylas did not have much in the way of social skills. He could not relate to other people; he is unable to relax or let his guard down because all of these social traits are things his father would have considered weakness. While he is generally kind to his crew those who cross him and those who are his enemy will quickly learn how cruel he can be. His punishments are often harsh, the navy after all, is no place for those who cannot follow orders but he will never torture his people. Pirates, on the other hand, are an entirely different story, he believes a simple hanging is far too good a death for the likes of them. Kai will go to great lengths to protect his men, and would never hang back in a battle and let them face danger without him. Only a coward would expect the men they lead to do something their leader would not. He does, however, understand that sacrifice is necessary in what they do and he will shed no tears for those who lose their lives; dying for king and country is a great honor. Kai strives to show the same qualities he excepts from his crew; courage, hard work, and dedication. Once giving his orders, he will go to whatever lengths it takes to accomplish them. Although he does not have a quick temper, he certain does possess a great deal of rage to those he sees as traitors. Pirates and their lawless nature are, to Kai, the ultimate expression of this, traitors to not only the king but to the ideas of law and order itself. Towards his crew he is forgiving, so long as they take responsibility for their mistakes and learn from them. While he can be patient if necessary, he prefers to act quickly and efficiently, once one goal has been accomplished a new one can start and that is how best to serve his king. He does not waste time doubting his decisions, to him it serves no purpose, once a path has been chosen, he follows it through to the end. He is also more than willing to indulge in whims; when they have time offshore or for a break to recharge and let lose this serves an important purpose, morale matters to him and a miserable crew does sloppy work. Kai believes it is important to project absolutely confidence, if he doesn’t believe he is doing things right then why should the rest of the crew. Kai will allow nothing to hold him back, he sees himself as an unstoppable force, like a hurricane. Though intelligent and self-taught he is well aware that there are plenty who surpass him in this quality but this is out of his control. What is in his control is how hard he is willing to work, through determination he has accomplished his goals, and he will continue to out last his enemies. He wants success and glory more than he wants to draw breath, and Kai is intense and passionate about what he believes in; a world governed by peace and justice rather than the lawless chaos they have now. He also understands that the better world he believes in holds no place for him, he is man of war and violence and one day he hopes the world lacks a need for men like him. He mostly maintains a cheerful disposition, having a sense of humor about things and enjoying the company of those who make him laugh. He does, after all enjoy what he does, and his sin is that he gives into that; embracing rage and violence even if directed at those who deserve it, are not the qualities of a good man. He knows it takes a monster to fight monsters and so that is the personal sacrifice he is willing to make.

Humble Origins ⋆ Hard-Work ⋆ Notoriety
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Background Occupation
Naval Captain
Which ship are you on?
Currently, his own ship, The Mako
Living Immediate Family Members:
Possibly his mother.
Dead Immediate Family Members:
His father.
Current and Past Lover(s):
In love, no, but lovers, sure. It would be unbecoming of an officer to brag about his conquests in love though, at least while sober.
History: The life of famed pirate hunter and naval captain Kai Calder started with humble beginnings. Born the son of a hardworking tavern owner and a free-spirited mermaid, Kai was never able to know his mother. The merfolk his mother came from forbid intermingling with land creatures, so it seemed his parents were destined to be star-crossed, and his mother was forced to choose between land and sea. So, once he was born, she returned her child to the land, as they would never accept him as a true merman. This is a decision he can easily forgive, for he understands that to give up the sea, and its peace, would be unbearable. He was raised by his father, a man who worked for everything he had, a trait Kai admired as his home was on Fallcliff, a place engulfed by thieves and vagrants. He lost his father at the age of ten; killed by a pirate who was disgruntled over a bar tab. Kai was forced survive alone, taking whatever work a young boy could find; fishing, dock work, and cleaning up for various business. He pulled himself up from the gutter and after several years he saved up enough money for passage to Glassston where he immediately enlisted in the royal navy. It is the sea that has always been his true home, and whether swimming in it or sailing on it, Kai finds the himself content to be close to the water. The first time he saw battle was absolutely exhilarating, instead of keeping his rage pent up he was able to unleash it all on those he blamed for taking his father from him; pirates. His brutality in war was rewarded, and that coupled with his hard work and ability to get the job done helped him slowly work his way up through the ranks. Eventually his goal of becoming a captain with his own vessel to command was achieved and before long he gained a reputation for hunting down pirates. He sought them out, seeking to make the seas and ports safe for good people. Kai was handsomely rewarded for his efforts and as he gained experience, he began seeking out the pirates with the most fearsome reputations. His notoriety as a pirate hunter extended throughout Ossvien, no doubt that there are many a pirate who fear his name and the flag his ship sails; a royal blue flag with a silver shark tail. He became the man the navy sent on the most dangerous of missions, to face down the most despicable of pirates; a man known for getting the job done by any means necessary. Although his methods aren’t always celebrate by the navy, they recognize that he gets results, and while his name isn’t one that is beloved, it certainly one that is known. As a half breed, he has a longer life span than a human but not as long a pure merfolk. He has a merman form, and with it the heightened abilities of the merfolk, but this form is not as powerful as a full-blooded merfolk would have. With it the weakness of a merfolk is less as well; while he doesn’t have to take frequent trips to the water, he is much more prone to the effects of dehydration, which for him can turn deadly more quickly than regular human. Heat dehydrates him quicker, fire is far more deadly, and he needs to drink water more often than human.
