When the roleplay starts I'm going to begin in a Monster Phase so everyone can get used to how the battles work, plus an excuse to get people together quickly. To make the fights more interesting I want to give a good portion of control to the players so that it is much easier to make exciting battle scenes. To help facilitate this I'll be using a system I have dubbed the
Battle ~Flow~ System
Battle Start - When facing a 'boss' for the first time the battle flow system comes into effect. Often I will initiate the combat and then hand over the combat reigns to the combatants. You will be able to fight to your hearts content and try your best to take down the boss. Depending on how you tackle the monster you may expose a weakness or effective strategy against your opponent. As this is the battle start you are of course forbidden from killing the boss and keep in mind the type of monster as you fight. Monster Reaction - After a few posts your battle efficiency will be graded and potential weaknesses might be uncovered. The monster will attempt some sort of battle changing action, dependent on your previous actions. The battle will then continue as is or the battle will enter the battle's end phase where the monster is ripe for destruction. Battle's End Phase - At this point the monster can be defeated, make it flashy and make everyone proud. A good idea to choose ahead who will finish the fight or in some cases only certain characters will have the ability to end it if a certain power is needed. Once the monster is dead the Monster Phase is over. -or- Battle Continues - Essentially the same rules as during Battle Start, battle how you like but take into account any changes the Monster Reaction phase has made to the fight, such as weaknesses exposed or adaptations added. The fight continues until the next Monster Reaction where the monster will either run out of time and disappear to fight another day, or the fight enters into the Battle's End Phase.
The Bestiary
Here the monster's name, appearance, abilities, behavior, and general stats will be available for all to see. This will make it easy to know what kind of a fight you should expect when stacked up against your character. Use the information to write your own battle scenes to your hearts content. For the most part only the 'boss' monsters will make it here which means you will be unable to slay them until I give the go ahead. Vulnerabilities - As fights occur the weak points of a monster will become apparent which will open strategies that can be used against them. Often a monster cannot be defeated unless these are taken advantage of. Adaptation - Monsters that fight long enough will have the opportunity to adapt, which could potentially seal away an exposed weakness or increase a monster's lethality.
So when all is said and done, use the information from the bestiary to help inform your fights and then depending on what kind of methods of attack you use the fight will change accordingly. At any time I may go into a Monster Reaction Phase, so not everyone needs to post at every stage of a fight so the story can continue. With this system I want it to free you up to fight how you want while keeping the fights interesting and interactive. Hopefully it goes swimmingly.
