His outfit consists of a dingy white shirt under a waistcoat, a pair of rough spun grey trousers and a serviceable pair of boots. Backstory: Joseph was not born in Yharnam, instead growing up in a foreign neighbour with his father Johann and his older brother Jonathan; his mother died when he was still young, young enough that he barely remembers the woman, from a disease that the local doctors had been unable to diagnose. About fifteen years ago his brother came down with the same illness, seemingly less severe but with the same symptoms as those his mother had had at first. In response, unwilling to lose another family member to sickness, his father took the two boys to Yharnam to seek out the curative properties of blood ministration from the Healing Church. As expected Jonathan made a miraculous recovery and in the process became a true Yharnamite. Rather than return to their home country the family stayed in Yharnam, making the strange and foreboding city their new home. Many years later, Jonathan fell ill again. The same disease as before, returning again and attacking more aggressively than ever; his health deteriorated quickly and while the Church were again able to save his life the amount of blood required to do so left its mark on the young man. He returned from the treatments a changed man, more aggressive and quick to anger, not to mention paranoid at times even of his own family. Five years ago, on the night of the blood moon, Johann was stuck away from home as night fell and his two sons were left at home alone. After a few hours he still had not returned and all Joseph and Jonathan could do was wait until dawn and hope for the best; listening as beasts prowled the streets and Yharnamites roamed the city in packs. Both dangerous in their own ways. Eventually Jonathan grew impatient and restless, both traits he hadn’t possessed until his blood treatments at the Church, and he left to go find their father. Joseph tried to follow, but his brother barred his way and told him to stay, to wait for their father in case he returned and found them both missing. Jonathan left with nothing but a lantern to protect him while Joseph stayed home, barricaded the doors and prayed that he had enough incense to last the long night of the hunt. He survived the night, but his family was torn apart. His father’s body was found in the street a few hundred meters from their house, torn apart by something, while his brother was never found. Even five years later he doesn’t know what become of Jonathan; though the fact that he died on that night is a near certainty, Joseph can’t help but hope he’s still alive. If he is then Joseph might not ever get the chance to find out; he’s been feeling a little under the weather recently and it’s not getting any better. He’s been reluctant to pay a visit to the Healing Church after what became of his brother, but surely being changed by the blood has to be better than death, right?
