He was lucky enough to have gotten a full ride through a swimming scholarship. In his "contract" with the school, he has to maintain his grades at a certain average or face losing the scholarship and thus getting kicked out. Which is something he does not want to happen. Because he rarely shows emotions he usually ends up giving a cold impression to others, but it is shown that he does care about his friends and notices small upsets in their behavior. He carries himself with a lot of modesty, but he is extremely talented in both games and volleyball - earning him his spot as the school's setter.
