I guess i might be too late but I've always been interested in pokemon and tabletop games, but never had a chance to get past a session 0. My only time i had a chance to play, the gm kicked and blocked me because I wanted to have a character with a living family in the her background. If i remember his words correctly "You can't be an adventurer if you have a family, they have to be dead." Kicked when I tried to ask why not.

Pokemon naturally seems A bit of a step in the right direction, unless the group is going for a much darker theme pokemon normally allows somebody to have a live family.
