For some of the witches that decided to embrace Christianhood, this posed a problem. Back during the late 3rd Century and early 4th Century Rome, it was not unusual for pagans to convert to Christianism and use their gifts to help the budding religion escape persecution. Margaret of Antioch was one of such. A converted daughter of a pagan priest (and thus with witchcraft in her veins) devised a way for those who were like her to serve the faith. After her supposed defeat of a dragon (some say it was some sort of other supernatural creature brought by the pagan Roman Governor of the time) and her supposed martyrdom (whom it was an attempt to feign her own dead), she reached out to those with the same kind of gifts in the budding community. Margaret realized something. The very powers the early christians reviled, if painted in a different light, they'd be very much welcome. So, Witches became "exorcists" and "supernatural gifts" were painted as "charismata", that is, gifts given by the Holy Spirit. Even the secret name she picked for the organization hinted at this duality. "Anathema" means something that is set apart and banished, but on early acceptions it could also mean set apart to be consecrated. The early organization saw this name fitting, as they would be witches and otherwise supernatural beings living in the shadow of Christendom. Margaret of Antioch was heavily involved in the crusades, and some witches came to resent such hands on involvement in political matters and affecting the world directly, so the council of Twelve was founded as a counterweight to not accumulate too much power on a single individual. Another great trial was the various schisms that happened to the Christianity, as people called each other heretic. Anathema was thankfully spared of being dragged in the midst of the fire, citing that exorcisms wouldn't simply do on misguided people. Even so, each one of the branches, or at least someone near the top managed to keep contact with this organization. In modern days, were more freedom and lax attitude are the dominant tendency, Anathema is once more going internal restructuring. Maybe it's time to leave the Faith to their own devices and bury the sword, but those who have been in battle for too long eventually yearn for more. Some of the current heads are trying to purge the most callous individuals, sending them in proxy requests like the one that has happened at Ember Grove. 》Goals: "super aspidem et basiliscum calcabis conculcabis leonem et draconem"("The asp and the basilisk you will trample under foot; you will tread on the lion and the dragon") That is, keep being the hand in the dark that brings ruin and crushes the heretics and demonic creatures who tempt and assault the people of the Faith.
