I was having too much trouble working Mai's backstory into the rp so I decided to try a fresh approach. He’s gained a little bit of a reputation around White Harbour for his impulsiveness, brash attitude and disregard for authority. Ostracized from a young age due to the mysterious nature of his birth in the Valley of the Ancients, Kim has understandably grown to be resentful of the adults who sneer and speak in hushed whispers as he walks past. He tends to be argumentative and highly defensive, especially when talk of his mother is involved. His trust issues were deeply ingrained by an upbringing of shame, paranoia and prejudice; so much so that Kim often finds it difficult to talk to people who show him kindness and compassion. He relies heavy on his fight or flight response and it can take him a while to feel safe and comfortable around the right people. Kim respects his father for providing for him despite having no biological obligation to do so. The man never once belittled Kim either, which is more than he can say for every other adult in his life. Even so, their relationship is practically non-existent. Kim has been given free reign all his life, resulting in somewhat of an unchecked mischievous streak. He tends to get bored easily and often uses thoughtless pranks as an outlet; usually at the expense of others. He doesn’t handle confrontation very well, often snapping back and growing violent if roused enough. For those who are able to get through to him, Kim can be a fun guy to hang out with. He’s not great at openly discussing his feelings, tending to keep people at arms-length as much as possible. If pushed he shuts down, leading to a lot of his relationships failing due to his own insecurity. Kim has never felt as though he truly belonged in White Harbour – his soul yearns for the Valley of the Ancients. Stricken by an insatiable curiosity about his mother and where he was born, the boy has an unnatural connection to the strange lands. He keeps this to himself, not wanting to give the townspeople more ammunition against him. His face is round with an undefined jawline and he sports messy spiked hair that has been bleached and coloured pink. His eyebrows are thick and dark, retaining his natural colour. He has light brown eyes that turn fuchsia when he uses his magic. His skin is fair with warm cheeks that are dotted with irregular freckles and blemishes. His nose is crooked from the last time he broke it. Kim’s attire is pretty casual and thoughtless. He wears enough layers to keep warm, usually seen in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. He wears a couple rings that his father let him keep and usually keeps his mothers brooch tucked away in his pocket. After struggling to conceive for many years, it became clear that Maria would never be able to bear children. She grew withdrawn and depressed, a shell of her former self. Sinh was devoted to his wife and offered her all he could, but it was not enough. Maria began to develop strange and irrational behaviours – sleepwalking, muttering about strange creatures and carving strange symbols into the walls. Sinh had no choice but to have her committed to an institution a few towns over to help keep her from doing something that could cause her harm. He left her with a special brooch that belonged to his own mother. A few days later, Sinh was informed there was an incident on the way to the asylum and Maria had escaped. She had seemingly vanished into thin air. Years passed and Sinh grieved, but he was ultimately able to move on with his life. Until a crying babe was found on the outskirts of the Valley of the Ancients, swaddled in strange beast pelts held together with Maria’s brooch. Sinh took the child in, gave him a name and did his best to provide a home. Yet as Kim began to grow, the likeness to Maria became too much for Sinh to bear. Despite his best efforts to hide his anguish from Kim, it became clear that his father held very little love for the child. He wasn’t even entirely convinced Kim was Maria’s. The alternative was throwing the boy onto the street or to an orphanage, and Sinh couldn’t do that. So, the two of them remained a family – distant and dysfunctional but a family all the same. Growing up, Kim learned quickly he was different. White Harbour kept the boy at a distance from the other youth, muttering of his strange origin and the mysterious rumours of Maria’s descent into madness before her disappearance. Kim wasn’t entirely sure why he was being treated with such suspicion, but he knew it wasn’t fair. He began to lash out more at those who would gawk at him as they passed on the street or belittle him for his lineage. He caused a lot of trouble for his father, but Sinh would merely apologise to the victims of Kim’s frustration. He would offer recompense and then go about his day. He never once tried to defend Kim or explain why everyone treated him so differently. That only served to push him further away from Kim. Kim grew up by his own rules, figuring no one would really care if he acted out a bit. In fact, it was pretty much expected. Fights at school, inappropriate pranks and nights roaming the streets became Kim’s norm. When the young delinquent discovered his natural aptitude for his strange branch of Fire Magic, it only further added to his recklessness. Except now, there was someone else paying attention to him. Aiden Cross, a heroic wizard establishing his own Guild in White Harbour, took interest in the young boy born in the Valley of the Ancients and his peculiar magic. Kim was offered a place to hang out any time he felt like he needed some space or a friendly ear. Reluctant at first, Kim would eventually start skipping class to hang out at Winter’s Blade. He hasn’t officially joined, requiring permission from his father to do so, but he has definitely been spending most of his time at the Guild Hall recently.
| Magic: |
Lunar Flame Magic Caster Magic. A rare variation of Fire Magic in which Kim holds a natural affinity for despite no formal training. It is speculated that Kim, being born in the Valley of the Ancients, inherited the magic at birth as a by-product of his strange origins. As the name would suggest, Lunar Flame draws power from the moon to fuel the ethereal black and fuchsia flames (Moonfire) Kim is able to conjure from his body. While it holds mostly the same properties as normal fire, its power fluctuates depending on the time of day and the phases of the moon. During the day his fire functions normally with no spectacular effects. He is able to control who is affected by his flames, allowing allies to touch and move through it without consequence. At night his magic receives a boon, growing in strength and intensity. His Moonfire is also capable of burning away illusions and falsehoods during the night. His powers are further increased exponentially during a full moon; however, Kim undergoes a strange personality shift during this time. He becomes distant and aloof, the lure of the Valley bearing down on him with a strange urgency. Kim is unable to wield his magic at night during a new moon. His fire also tends to act without his consent; jumping from place to place and twisting into various forms all on it's own. It seems to have a mind of its own at times.
