Maiko comes from the Ashikaga clan, one of the richest, longest standing clans in Konoha. The Ashikaga clan made their money in a certain kind of way.

Possessing the unique Wood Release kekkei genkai, the Ashikaga has been a member of Konoha since the founding of the village. Strangely, though, they were virtually pacifistic and have maintained that lifestyle for most of their existence. Nonetheless, they are rather greedy, and used their kekkei genkai to create the family business: The Soaked Grove.

The Soaked Grove is a huge grove of trees created through the clan’s kekkei genkai, complete with a tea garden, hot springs, and… Konoha’s only brothel. Throughout the long lasting shinobi war, the Soaked Grove offered a discount to all the soldiers hard at work protecting them… normally, something like Wood Release would have been forcibly weaponized by its village, but Konoha saw so much tax revenue, and charitable donations from the Soaked Grove, that they made no attempt to force the Ashikaga out of their pacifism.

What makes the Ashkaga Clan so influential is the unique circumstances surrounding the clan. While it is true that the Ashikaga have Wood Release, it is limited strictly to the [i]men[/i] of the clan. As Maiko is a woman of the clan she is part of the side of the family that married into the Ashikaga centuries ago. No one is quite sure how it happened, her elders have said many stories over the years and each of them could be as true as they are false, but while the men get Wood, the females get heated. Specifically, the female Ashikaga often are fortunate enough to provide the hot springs to the Soaked Grove's...groves by way of Boil Release. 

The simplest explanation and the one the family uses is that two different clans both with unique kekkei genkai were joined in unison in the past and rather than their future generations favor one or the other, it split by gender. 

For generations now, the Ashikaga have been one of the most affluent and wealthy families in Konoha, boasting an even bigger grover, an even bigger collection of hot springs, and even more options for companionship… but now, two of the members of the youngest generation of the Ashikaga are committed to becoming shinobi and protecting and serving their village!

Mai is well aware of the stigma her clan has, both because of their unique attribute and because they are incredibly fortunate with their fortune. She means to show that just because she comes from wealth doesn't mean she can't give back to the village in more direct ways. Plus, someone has to keep her brother from making the reputation of the clan even worse.
