She’s not mean, and she’d never be so crass as to exclude anyone from anything, but she nevertheless has a very inflated opinion of herself. She’s always polite and complimentary in conversation, listening to what others have to say and making them feel good about themselves, but that kindness often comes with a rider of condescension. Deep down, of course, she’s deeply insecure about herself and her accomplishments, always feeling like it’s about to be snatched away from her at any moment, but you’d never know that from talking to her. She’s very determined to accomplish her goals, but does not handle problems very well – for her, out of sight is out of mind, and she’d rather run away from issues and put on a smiling face than ever actually deal with them. At the end of the day, she’s really not a bad person – just an extremely driven and slightly self-centered one. 【 SKILLS 】 List five things that your character is good at. . It was late, some time after the rec center closed – anyone else would have gotten a reprimand if they’d been caught there, but Rachel knew she could just flash the security guard a wink and a smile, and she’d get let off easily, and she’d needed to get more practice in if she was going to be ready for the big meet in two weeks. She’d been drying herself off, about to go home, when she heard it – a shrill scream, coming from the pool. Immediately, she crept to the doorway and stuck her head out. Whatever she’d been expecting to see, it wasn’t what awaited her. The soft, chlorinated water of the pool had been replaced by an inky black abyss, so deep she could not see the bottom. There were people in the water, dozens of them, men and women, old and young, all thrashing and kicking. Their hands pounded on the surface of the water from below, like it was a glass barrier they could not cross, and bubbles flew from their mouths as they screamed and pleaded up at her to save them. She remained transfixed, their distorted voices ringing in her ears, frozen in horror as slowly, one by one, they went limp in the water, and floated down to the blackness below. Rachel turned and ran. She sprinted, mad, breathless, still dripping from the pool, all the way back to her dormitory, where she locked the door and sat, huddled in a ball for some time, the ghastly images springing unbidden to her mind. She awoke the next morning and decided to pretend it never happened, yet no matter how hard she tries to move forward, she cannot outrun what she saw. 【 BIOGRAPHY 】 Rachel is a city girl – the child of a businessman and a high-powered attorney in Moscow, her parents loved her, but they never had much time for her. She grew up alone in their fancy apartment, and quickly learned that the most surefire way to her parent’s approval was accomplishment, of any kind. Every test she aced or advanced program she was placed into earned her a little bit more praise from those two distant figures, and though she didn’t have much in the way of friends, she excelled. When she was a little older, her parents sent her off to a girl’s school – it was a prestigious institution, well suited to a girl like her, though she always wondered if they just didn’t want to worry about having her around. Nevertheless, she flowered in this setting, quickly establishing herself as the Queen Bee of her class. This was when her athletic career began in earnest, as well – her drive to succeed proved to serve her well as she pursued first the track team, then later the swim team. All throughout her successes, she kept up her humble, smiling exterior, and eventually she graduated the girl’s school and accepted a partial athletic scholarship offered to her by a small university in the middle of nowhere. It wasn’t that she needed the money, of course, but the university fit snugly into her ten-year plan; graduate with flying colors with a degree in public policy, pursue swimming professionally, silver medal in the Olympics, retire, use her fame and her rural university cred to launch a world-shaking politics career. Lofty goals, sure, but aren’t those the best kind?
