To those she doesn't know well (especially those who annoy her), she is arrogant and prideful, having little patience for any who question the genius of the Yamato clan's prodigy and always finding subtle ways to demonstrate her standing. Around those who she respects she has a different side, less abrasive but still not actually polite, more of a trickster who is trying to force people to examine things deeper by throwing them out of their comfort zone. She takes to know people and understand them. Katsumi is very much driven by her sense of right and wrong. She always tries to do what she believes is right for someone she care about, not what is easiest or most socially acceptable. Inside, she's conflicted between wanting to help people grow and her own bitterness towards the world, leading to a harshness that conceals more idealistic goals.

[sub][color=f43f1a][b]P E R S O N A L  H I S T O R Y[/b][/color][/sub][indent][color=f43f1a]Katsumi Yamato was born into the fabled Yamato clan of Iwagakure, famed for their scholarly pursuits and their skill on the battlefield. The clan has produced many philosophical and martial treatises, but the most known is the Yamato Encyclopedia of Warfare, their comprehensive manual of the clan's combat technicques, expanded with each generation. Thanks to their reputation, not only have they occupied by the esteemed position of controlling Iwagakure's academy, they have also been trusted advisors to the Tsuchikage. They have only been able to maintain this position through putting their own clan through even more rigorous standards, demanding that they demonstrate proficiency in the core of the curriculum and memorize the text content of the Encyclopedia before they can call themselves full members of the clan. This had become a controversial requirement by Katsumi's time, fewer and fewer of each generation were able to accomplish it, and her father Yasunari even argued for abolishing it, but was overruled by her uncle Yukio. It was his belief that through this relentless drive for perfection they would ensure that the position of Tsuchikage went to a Yamato. Katsumi herself was able to finish the curriculum ahead of schedule, the only Yamato of her generation to do so, and was hailed as a genius for that accomplishment. The clan prepared for an even greater celebration when it was time to choose the next Tsuchikage, the whole village had practically decided that Yukio was the only one worthy to hold the title. Mysteriously, Yukio died before the choice for Tsuchikage was announced, and the position went to a rival clan. No investigation was ever launched into his death, and no explanation was given, but rumors swirled.

After Yukio's death the Yamato family did what they always did, they wrote, they theorized, and they trained. Katsumi threw herself into training even harder than before, and an eerie silence developed around the whole situation among the clan. When asked about his thoughts on the choice for the Tsuchikage, Yasunari was reticent, but expressed the thought that he wished there would be a day when they would not need a Tsuchikage. He longed for a time when all the citizens of Iwagakure could defend themselves and the village against attackers and could stand together as free and equal brothers in arms, not as a hiearchy of the strong hoarding their power over the weak. Such talk was controversial, and only became more controversial when the war broke out. Unusually, the Yamato clan declined to provide many fighters, saying that their greatest value was as teachers, and the village leaders reluctantly agreed, keeping the core of their clan off of the frontlines. Katsumi was hungry for battle but hated the village leadership, leaving her with a dilemma she could not resolve until an envoy from Konoha made a secret deal with her. Joining them was the best revenge she could think of, and the massive payment they offered only sweetened the deal. Not only did she bring a huge cache of valuable information, she became a terrifying fighter on Konoha's side, the one woman artillery barrage known for her blissful calm on the battlefield. 

The end of the war forced Katsumi to confront things she had ignored beforehand. Going back to Iwagakure was out of the question, but settling in Konoha proved awkward as well. Now, people were willing to share their true feelings about her betrayal of her home, how it was against the philosophy of the village. They would tolerate her, but she was not trusted enough to be given any power or important responsibilities. She made a few attempts at teaching and quit everytime out of dissatisfaction with the students she instructed, furious that they could not meet her standards. Afterwards, Katsumi retreated to her estate, working on literary pursuits and her own exploration of new jutsus. Over those years she invented the Rasengan, in hopes of finding a powerful jutsu that could be used regardless of elemental affinity, but so far has not found anyone willing to learn the level of Chakra control needed. Her writing has won her acclaim among the intellectual crowd but has had little popular success, the biggest success being her history of the shinobi war compiled from interviews with fellow veterans. In public, she is most often seen playing Go or visiting a bar when they hold a "Name that Jutsu" trivia night, always winning unless a Kaminari is also competing. One particular bet she lost is what led to her latest attempt at teaching Genin, and the past three years have seen several "writing sabbaticals" that may or may not have been attempts to quit before the Hokage stepped in to hold her to her promise. They were farmers, not ninjas, a choice made by the founders of the clan when they discovered that their bloodline gave them strong endurance but great difficulties with chakra manipulation. This specialization only grew stronger over time, generation after generation worked their ancestral lands, making their small patch productive through their ability to work longer and harder. Kotestu's parents, Masaru and Ryoko, were no different, always toiling away on the farm, and trusting that their children would do the same one day. Tetsuya, Kotetsu's older brother, was much older than him, Kotetsu himself was born when his parents were beggining to feel the strain of aging. When the war came the fighting forced them from their land, it was too far from the center of the village to be worth defending. The fighting grew worse and the village asked for another sacrifice, their eldest son. The family only avoided hunger by selling the deed to their land, the agreement would allow them to keep it until Masaru and Ryoko passed away, but longer than that. Tetsuya died in the fighting, his commander talked about how brave he was, but that did not console them. The war had taken their land, taken their son, it had taken their future, and given them nothing in return.

Kotestu grew up knowing that the future had nothing for him. He had no inhertence, no legacy, nothing to look forward to. He got into fights a lot, he lost a lot, but found he was extremely tough. His lack of ability with jutsus had convinced him to stay away from the ninja academy, but his reputation grew and eventually he decided to join. Being a ninja wasn't a childhood dream of his; what it did offer was a way to provide for his family and an impressive challenge that he knew he could overcome. At the academy he proved even worse at ninjutsu and genjutsu than expected. His true talent was taijutsu, and he trained hard, working the fields in the day and training his body at night. Some of his classes took multiple tries before he managed to make a passing grade, but the faculty saw his dedication and kept encouraging him to try again. Eventually, he graduated, later than usual but still in time for the chunin exams.[/color][/indent]

[indent][color=#396047]Character development-wise, Kotestu's main journey is learning to actually be close to other people, and have some hope for the future. At the start of the RP, he lives his life on autopilot, believing in his ideal of pressing forward, but doing so only because it's what he's always done; in his mind there is no other choice. He sees it as solitary goal, something which will likely change over the course of the RP

Kotestu is built around one thing, taking big hits. This means that he can be used for dramatic moments, demonstrating the strength of someone's attack. He's good for being a supporting role in a fight, holding people off to buy time, or or blocking a hit at a critical moment. It also gives him a power progression, getting more durable over time. Taijutsu is and will remain the total of his offensive capabilities, but perhaps over time he learns to refine it more and relies less on just tanking hits. Learning to open the 8 gates will also be part of the journey. His problems with healing also offer potential for drama, such as coping with damage that never quite patches up, or using unconventional medical technicques. Maybe by the end of it he'll have a bunch of improvised and not medically safe materials patching his body together, things like metal or wooden bits.[/color][/indent]

He has an ugly style, closer to street brawling than fluid moves, but it works and throws people off. He commonly uses kicks to wear down an opponent, especially leg kicks, and also likes brawl up close and catch people in the clinch where he unloads with knees, elbows, and dirty boxing. Kotetsu favors a few big hits over a rapid fire barrage, and doesn't move especially fast of a Taijutsu specialist, but when he needs the power he can bring it.[/color]

It's got a blend of speed and power that makes it perfect for that purpose, but needs proper set up to avoid telegraphing it. Kotetsu's favorite tactic is to let it loose at the same time his opponent is landing a heavy blow, trusting that he'll come out the winner in the exchange.[/color][/INDENT]
