One step out of line would be answered with mental and physical abuse. Sindia was worthless, Caslan was useless, and neither of them was fit to have the family name. Caslan did his best to protect Sindia. Even at a young age he tried desperately to keep her innocent of the horrors that their grandfather wished to inflict. Unfortunately, he was too small, too weak. He couldn't truly do anything to the brute of a man he had been named for. And so they endured him until Caslan was 12, when the old man passed in the night. Simultaneously Caslan was free of his tyranny and thrust into the seat of the Fang family. Many distant relatives attempted from the day of the funeral to refute Caslan's claim to the title and estate, but none succeeded in anything more than pushing him away from the concept of family as a whole. In an effort to better protect himself and his sister, Caslan put more emphasis on his basic martial arts training. He wanted to know all he could that might keep them safe. He found that he had a knack for fighting and gave himself over to the life of guarding Hua'mu from all that might threaten it.
