Gwendolyn, who quarreled in front of him, was the first thing he registered in his view, and by the time he noticed her abrasion had jostled his drink out of his hand, it was too late.

...Or, that’s what Cain had believed. While the drink appeared to fall in slow motion, Cain realized that he himself could move just fine. With a degree of finesse he had not known himself to be capable of, Cain plucked his glass out of the air without spilling a single drop. Though he was unsure as to what exactly just happened, he was nonetheless impressed with himself. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, it seemed that no one had paid attention to Cain's tremendous feat of dexterity.

Still riding the high that is self-admiration, Cain turned to his side and was met with the gaze of a young woman. As he gazed upon her pale skin, Cain’s stomach once again reminded him why he was drinking tonight. He looked away dejectedly.

It was only as he once again felt the carnal vampiric drive well up within his chest -- what’s left of it at least -- that he began to size up the crowd as if he were a lion stalking a gazelle.

…

Like a beacon, Rose attracted Cain’s hungry gaze. His eyes, like those of a snake about strike, softened and he shook away the haze of bloodlust. While he could tell that she spoke with Cain’s wellbeing in mind, he also sensed the caution about her words.

”Don’t call me bud.”

Dismissing a girl like Rose went against everything Cain had learned in highschool. He was grateful, truthfully, to have someone who drove his attention away from his hunger. And somewhere buried beneath the cacophony of vampirism, the fraternity side of Cain was screaming.

But Cain knew that Rose was right to have caution. In his current state, a simple conversation could lead to something Cain could never go back on.
