An only child, his family had very firm roots in the muggle world with his mother being a middle school principal and his father working as a professor of Zoological Medicine at university. This meant it was impossible for Devin not to fall in love with animals of all kinds through his father. In his younger years everyone was oblivious to his magical awakening due to the fact that animals were often the only ones to witness them. One time he was walking their dog and a bigger dog came barking at them. Scared of the oncoming threat Devin started to run and hide only to watch as his families dog suddenly grew twice its size and scare off the attacking dog. By the time his parents were home the dog had returned to its normal size. When his parents received his letter to Hogwarts it was a shock to them both, but mostly to his mother. Sure, she was learning that her son was a Wizard, but even more she was now learning that instead of attending her school there was an entirely new educational system in store for Devin. This was not immediately decided and after earning a very rare and short tour of the school Devin’s mother finally accepted that her son was not going to muggle school. Instead he would be attending Hogwarts. As well as a muggle summer school she selected. That was her one stipulation. The extra school happened right away and the summer before attending Hogwarts was one of the most accedemically brutal times in his scholastic career. When Devin first arrived at the train for Hogwarts he was excited to see the magic world in full force. He was nervous of course, but soon enough he realized there were plenty of other ‘new to the magic world’ students and even more students wanting to make friends he quickly. As soon as a bat can turn Devin found himself a part of several social groups to pass the time in the halls and study sessions between class. In his early years he would often visit the Owlery and sketch the owls which he would send home to his father who loved them and kept every one. Over time he started to get pretty good and requests came in to make copies and send them to the owls owner. Around his fourth year Devin began to invest more time and energy into some of his classes. It came as no surprise that Care of Magical Creatures earned the most attention. Soon enough he began to self study his way beyond the school curriculum and dove head first into self academics. To keep him busy the professor would more often have him assist with classes than actual be a student. With the help of the schools network as well as some friends of his he received several recommendations from Hogwarts which allowed him to start taking summer internships with different members of the magical creatures’ field. After getting the green light from his parents he began to spend part of every summer working with a research group around Europe. These opportunities helped Devin decide to commit to the field and graduate with an impressive resume. With school behind him Devin was able to find work quickly in the magical world. He spent his time working with several different ministries drafting and providing subject matter expertise for a new sweeping agreement to better protect and assist with large sized magical migration creatures. The role meant traveling a lot which he enjoyed immensely. His travels allowed him to continue his own research and has given birth to a new hobby of his – Muggle Bird Watching. When he got the letter from the new Hogwarts Headmaster inviting him to take the position of professor of Care for Magical Creatures his initial thought was to politely decline; however, curiosity got the better of him and he decided to accept. One week before school was to start he was more nervous then he was when he was about to start attending as a student. He wrote several letters to his old professor who happily shared his teaching guides and notes. Wanting to make a good impression Devin had begun to completely redraw the entire lesson plans for every year. As quickly as he could he drafted his mothers help who was excited to help her son in a world that she still knew little about. Obviously his father was happy to help as well and to prepare for the new role he ended up staying at his folks place for the rest of the summer. Their punishment was assisting the groundskeeper and Herbology professor with some basic gardening and gathering in the Forbidden Forest. During their visit to the Forbidden Forest the group happened upon a meadow where a small group of Unicorns were grazing. Devin was unbearable for nearly a month after this as he talked about it nonstop. His obsession was part fascination over the beauty of the creatures and some parts the fact that his wands core was a unicorn hair. Needless to say detention had to get more creative due to the fact that for a week after Devin was doing nearly all he could to get the same punishment.
