As I don't have a completely full understanding of the magic system I can't obviously go into full detail, but maybe my magic has to do with summoning more dogs and they can fight (Wolf pack sort of attack maybe)? My character would work as partly a scout who helps find the desired Soul Essence while also assisting with locating rivals and helping impede their abilities to gather it for themselves. 

Maybe because of his ability instead of being attached to one person he simply hires his skill set out to who pays him? Maybe due to the fact that he kept losing fights as one group wasn't using him to his best abilities or something.
