Even if he did that stuff to his son, there is no denying that his son is also another type of crazy. It is never mentioned of anything that Clancy did to scare Grey, which might have to do with Grey being scared of all the kids. 

Grey may also just be heartless Hitler, though I don't really know if that would be an accurate description. 

But as we also know Clancy tends to bring out the worst in people over and over again. Instead of killing the reds he was convinced they should erase their minds, a question of what does it even mean to be alive. 

Clancy doesn't care about the mind, but the physical breathing of the body, so if he tried to get something his way changed Grey. It's a thought that I feel like hasn't been thought about much.
