Well, at one point Angel revealed how he desired power. 

But...the bigger issue was that the sorcerer had erased all his memories of her in order to protect her. After she was out of his life, he got more and more obsessed with power until he became...well...dark. 

I am not sure how else to describe it. 

Shadow plays the sorcerer so..... -shrugs-
