“Ugh, these tents are so dusty!” Katherine looked under the deck and casually brushed aside some offending dirt with a finger. “I don’t know if I can sleep in these…” “That’s alright,” Cameron said. “I packed the tent that my family used to use back in Washington. It’s super good.” “Oh! That’s great!” Everything was going to be alright. They still had their crate of food. They still had a place to sleep. Cameron tried not to think about the veritable Atlantis nearby, and focused on the dry area available. “We need to set it up and get the site ready so we have a place to sleep. Look at those plants! This place gets a lot of rain, and I don’t want to get soaked.” “Gotcha. Where should we set up?” Cameron looked at what was left of the campsite. “Well, we don’t want to set up near the water, as we don’t know how much the level can change. We also don’t want to set up near any dying trees or low-hanging branches, as they can collapse and break the tent. Ideally, you want a flat plane with some trees above for shade that’s also blocked from wind.” The two considered their options, then settled on a flat patch of grass a little bit aways from the sunken grounds. Cameron dropped his bag and brought out the tent. “Here, help me set it up.” “That’s so big! Is it one of those ones that like, pop up?” Katherine undid the drawstring bag and dumped the contents onto the ground. He shook his head. “Automatic tents sometimes jam and collapse. This is nothing but a good old-fashioned canvas and metal tent.” He began to put the poles together while Katherine laid out the tarp. “After we finish, we need to consider a plan of action with everyone else.” The tent went up in no time. After Cameron hammered in the final stake, he stepped back and admired their work. The Schumaker family tent was a large 4-person, though that really meant 3 people and their luggage. The two set their belongings inside, packed their day-packs, and returned to the center to (hopefully) discuss further action.
