Just because he is a pacifist by nature, though, doesn't mean he doesn't have a spine of titanium. When something goes against his beliefs, he'll be the first one to put his foot down and calmly state exactly why he disapproves and in a dangerous situation he wont hesitate to use himself as a shield if it means helping someone. While he is extremely slow to anger, there are a few things that will make his temper flare, mistreating any of his books is a sure way to permanently get on his bad side. Another side to Carter is his fierce love for life - not the kind you might be thinking of either. He values every living being and will do anything in his power to prevent death. This might be due to his mother telling him time and time again what could happen if he ever loses control of himself, installing a fear of harming others in the boy from a young age. He wants to believe that everybody has good in them, something that might be used against him if he's not careful. He's a good guy and a good friend, if you let him be.
》H i s t o r y

Donna Patrick had always craved adventure, to see the world, which is why after graduating high-school she packed her bags, said goodbye to her pack and took to the road. She traveled around America for a few years, made friends, saw the sights, had fun. Every day was a new adventure, every other night was a party, until one day it wasn't. It was a shock to discover that a one-night-stand from a few weeks previous had unexpected consequences. Her family always had very strict views when it came to pre-marital coitus and she couldn't face the thought of going home to face their disappointment. Which is how she came to settle down in Bozeman, Montana and had Carter. It wasn’t long after arriving in town that she became close with Jim Winslow, a widower who works as a sergeant at the local police department. Unlike all her previous relationships that were purely physical, she and Jim connected on an emotional level. The love they shared was soft, nice, comfortable and exactly what she needed at that time. In spite of their feelings, they made sure to take their time with the relationship, Donna had Carter to think about now and Jim had a six-year-old son of his own from his first marriage. They couldn’t afford to rush into anything that might hurt the kids in the long run. They needn’t have worried. It was obvious both adults loved both children deeply, the cinch had always been about how the kids would feel. Jim’s son, James, adored Donna from the get-go and kept badgering his dad to marry her already. She tells the best stories about werewolves after all and she’s great at games like hide-and-seek and tag. The real reason he was so eager for her to become his stepmom, though, was because that means Carter would be his brother. Now, if James adored Donna, he loved Carter. Sure, he might not be old enough to play with properly, but he’ll grow and then James could teach him! He would make a great big brother too! Carter would never have to worry about anything as long as James would be there. Carter is also really soft and James loves it whenever he’s allowed to hold him. Carter must have shared the sentiment since his first word at ten months had been “Jay”, which he said while reaching out towards James. Four months after that, Donna and Jim were exchanging vows and the following year they celebrated by officially adopting the other’s kid – legally that is, they were already the other’s parents in all the ways that mattered.

Donna had never doubted Jim’s love or integrity, but that didn’t stop her from being scared about what could happen if he were to find out her and Carter’s true nature. She wanted to tell him so much, but she just couldn’t. She made sure that while she did her best to teach Carter to control himself, he knew to keep the secret, how important it was that he must never tell anybody about what he could do. Carter was confused and didn’t know why he couldn’t tell his brother or dad, but his mom knew everything so he tried to do right by her. Shortly after his fifth birthday the choice was taken out of their hands when James, eleven at the time, saw Carter transform and was rightly freaked out for all of five hours until Donna explained the situation. After that he thought it was the coolest thing ever and constantly badgered them to turn him into a wolf too, until Donna firmly told him that nothing of the sort will happen as of yet and that she’d think about it if he still wanted to be one by the time he’s twenty-one. Until then, she started including him in lessons about the supernatural side of the world so that he won’t be caught ill prepared if he insists on being a part of it, on the condition that he won’t tell his father, regardless of James’ reaction he was still a kid, adults are more unpredictable…besides, if Jim were to ever find out, it should be her responsibility to tell him. (When Donna asked James if he still wanted to be a werewolf after his twenty-first birthday, he respectably declined for the time being. Having had a couple of years to think about it, James told her that he’ll stick to being a human for now, but that he still wanted to learn about the supernatural world his brother would be a part of. She was rather smug about it.)

Carter experienced death for the first time when he was six years old. Mr. Kowalski – a kind older gentleman who lived next door to them and who would watch the kids whenever Jim and Donna needed a babysitter – had gone on his semi-annual camping trip when he encountered a regular wolf. He didn’t survive the encounter. When the boys heard about this, they were upset. Mr. Kowalski was a really nice guy and they really enjoyed spending time at his place and listening to his stories about his adventures as a lad. Donna took them aside and told them that this was why it was so important to always be in control, where a regular wolf could kill one a werewolf could kill twenty. That day Carter swore to himself that he would never kill anybody, or anything, ever – a vow that he has managed to keep up to present day.

From the moment Carter learned to read, he was hooked. He had already loved listening to his parents and brother reading to him, but he also knew that they couldn’t do it the entire time, which was fine. Once he was able to read for himself however…He refused to go anywhere without at least one book on his person at all times, which earned a little teasing from the other kids, but he didn’t mind one lick and refused to be anything but friendly (he still remembered Mr. Kowalski all too well) and the teasing stopped pretty quickly too after James did the proper big-brotherly thing and told them off once he found out. Once he started school, he also showcased a talent when it came to numbers. He was always the head of his math and English classes. When he was ten, Carter’s school held a talent show. Now Carter, he didn’t have a lot of friends at the time and thought it would be a good opportunity, only problem; he didn’t have a talent unless you count reading or numbers, which he didn’t. He scoured libraries, badgered his family and others relentlessly as he looked for something he could do, which was how he stumbled upon it. Coin tricks. Needless to say, he wasn’t nearly good enough to win by the time the talent show rolled by, but he stuck with it nonetheless, practicing whenever he could. He’s rather good at it now. Jim started teaching Carter how to use a handgun when he was thirteen, just like he taught James, Carter didn’t want to learn at first, because that means that he might have to use it one day. The thought of ever hurting someone, even by accident, was something that always terrified him, especially since his mother made sure to tell him that that was what would happen if he ever lost control of his abilities. She didn’t want to scare him, but it was important for him to understand exactly what was at stake – which he did all too well – ensuring that he grew up with a respect for all life, regardless of race, species or personality. Jim made sure to tell him, that it was all well and good not to use violence, but if anybody ever attacks him or somebody, he loves he’ll have to know how to protect himself, or else they’ll be the ones who’ll die. He was more willing to learn after that, but that didn’t mean he had to like it.

A month after Carter’s 16th birthday, Donna had received a mysterious phone-call in the morning. Nobody in the family knows what was said, but she was deeply shaken by it and appeared skittish and frightened for the rest of the day, up until she left to go pick up something at the market that afternoon. She didn’t come home. Jim led the search himself, scouring the town, calling nearby hospitals and police stations, putting a notice out on her car, taking the dogs out to the surrounding woods…It was as if she just vanished. A few weeks later, the family received a call from several towns over. One of the police officers there had seen a missing person’s poster of Donna and recognized her as the victim of a recent car-crash. It had been notable for him, as one of the firsts on the scene, because the impact of her car against the tree had decapitated her. The whole family mourned. Jim was inconsolable. James tried to stay strong for his father and brother, but it was difficult, especially with what he suspects really happened – considering everything Donna taught him – but won’t be able to prove. Carter…he started lashing out, pushing his friends and family away, spending more and more of his time either locked up in his room or escaping into the nearby woods. Not even James could bring him out of the dark mood that had settled over him. Just as everybody was at their wits end with the boy, the incident happened. Ron LeRoy was the local jock and bully in Carter’s school and had seemed to have it out for the bookworm since they started as freshmen together, always picking at him, trying to rile him up, provoke him. It had never worked, of course – Carter had long since discovered that it completely throws bullies off when you’re nice to them – until now. A single comment from Ron was the straw that broke the Camel’s back and all the rage, grief and frustration came boiling to the surface. His eyes flashing yellow, he struck out with his fist – his first actual punch – and struck true. Ron crumbled to the ground, motionless, and a small trickle of blood flowing from his head (he was fine, just knocked out and got a scratch on his head on the way down). Carter was horrified. He couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe. All he knew was that he hit Ron and now he wasn’t moving! He ran, pushing past the other students in the hall, out the school, down the road, out of town. He didn’t stop running until he was in the woods and that was only to chuck off his backpack and to transform before running once again. He felt sick, horrified at what he had done. For all he knew Ron could be dead (he wasn’t, relax)… He spent a good two days hiding in the woods, gave his father and brother a right fright when somebody found his backpack and torn clothes. There was no sign of blood, though, so James refused to believe the worst and set off, following the first set of wolf tracks he came across until he found Carter and basically dragged him out by his tail while giving him the tongue lashing of the century. Carter couldn’t help but shed a tear of relief when he heard that river was fine, only sporting a slight headache and promised that he’d be more careful, that he’d do better.

Carter kept to his promise, much to his brother and father’s relief and the next few years flew by until Carter graduated Highschool at eighteen with decent marks, A’s and B’s, before going on to attend university. Unlike his father and brother, Law Enforcement didn’t hold the same appeal, so when he graduated four years later, it was with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a job as a bookkeeper for a local business lined up.

When he was eleven he held Macy Aderson's hand. Exchanged a series of love notes with Nicole Winters when he was fourteen. Ended up kissing Cole Simons and Veronica Peters during two separate games of spin the bottle at different parties his roommate dragged him to. That's it. The total romantic experience in his life.

During his last year of university he encountered another werewolf for the first time, other than his mother of course. They told him about other towns that housed more of their kind and they bonded over having to keep their secret from humans. Unfortunately they didn't have much more than that in common and drifted apart after graduation. Carter went back home for a few years, working, spending time with his family, expanding his book-collection...but something felt off. He loved his life, don't get him wrong, but having bonded with another wolf...a part of him had felt alone since his mother died and he managed to push those feelings down because he had his father and brother to lean on. Befriending someone that was like him and then separating...it brought that loneliness back to the forefront of his feelings. After a few years of trying to push it down, he decided that it was time for a change. At the age of twenty-six he started making preparations to move to Ember Grove, recalling the name from the list of towns his friend told him about. The day before he left, he and his brother got matching piercings as a way to remember each other. It wasn't easy telling them about his move, but he believes it's the best move for him. Hopefully he's not wrong...

》J o b?
He does the bookkeeping for a couple of businesses digitally on his computer.
