I didn't get into this hobby until it was forum based as it is now. I do recall folks use to engage in collaborative works of fiction in a notebook. The leader would start the In Character content in the note book and then give it to the next person and keep passing it along until it came back to the leader. I have often considered trying this with friends. It might be just a tad cumbersome.
