A personality like sandpaper given flesh, Richard is abrasive: he knows it, his family knew it, his friends (few though they may be) supposedly tolerate it, and at this point it is a keystone of his entire being. The galling thing is that he can turn it off – has an impeccable bedside manner at work – but chooses not to for anyone he talks to regularly. He is direct, but doesn't hide behind the excuse of 'brutally honest'. He is both brutal [i]and[/i] honest, and is thick-skinned enough to immediately take a liking to those who are the same with him.

Shucking that hard shell of a persona he bears to the outside world, one might find... an infinite number of similar layers. It's prickles all the way down. He is proud, not to the point of sin, but takes an excessive pride in his work and his achievements, even more so in those he's taken under his wing. If he has a 'soft side', it shows when he reluctantly falls for a sad or sappy story, even though he swears up and down he hasn't, and in how he treats people who have done their thousand hours of trading barbs back and forth: with a sliver of vulnerability. If he truly lacked empathy, he wouldn't have chosen his career path; it is just well-hidden.

British-born and Renfrewshire-raised, Richard is far past the point where his childhood estrangements and youthful preoccupation with anarchy in the UK has any effect on his present or future. He clawed his way out of the pit of underachievement, attended a renowned university to study medicine, and since then has continued climbing: social ladders, housing ladders, career ladders – all the way up until he was set to be comfortable for the rest of his life and then some.

To hear him tell it, sentimentality is the fatal flaw that put him on that damn plane in the first place. Originally, he was only due to stay a few days in California for a medical conference on Intensive Care Medicine. Taking a few extra days and a flight to visit his niece in the Land Down Under, where she studies on his dime, was optional. The only remaining family member he can tolerate (and vice versa), even Richard doesn't know if he'd like her so much if she didn't desperately want to follow in his footsteps. Family has never been a priority for him.
