Lucy Selene

Lucy bit at the edge of her glove as she stared at the lockers lining the wall. Whatever confidence she’d had was quickly lost once she realized that she might have to go back into the cafeteria. And she hated herself for that, but she still couldn’t deal with the possibility of seeing a dead body. She’d just sent Lunasa in to clear the place out. She could still hear the Spirit fluttering about, shooting the occasional laser beam. She hoped she was being careful… Are you done yet? She finally asked. ”Almost. I’ll take care of these and make another sweep. After that, we should leave.” Leave?! Lucy looked back towards the door. ”These Spirits are too weak to be of any use to us.” Lunasa answered bluntly. ”It’s simply a waste of our abilities.” And what about the kids?! Are we just supposed to leave them?! ”As far as I’m concerned, you’ve done enough for them. And you can’t handle doing any more for them. Not like this.” Lucy didn’t respond. The moth had a point. She really wasn’t holding up. But she’d feel even worse if she left. ”Look, I’ve never heard of an attack like this in a very long time,” Lunasa’s tone softened a bit, perhaps realizing that she might have gone too far. ”This was most likely organized. If we hunt down the source of them, then that helps everyone, right?” ... Yeah, I guess. ”Then let’s at least check outside. There’s definitely some large Spirits out there. I’ll be coming back around, can you open the door for me? ”Sure thing…” Lucy said under her breath. She leaned into the door, pushing it open, and was promptly tackled to the ground. She let out a loud yell. ”Lucy?!” The Spirit’s voice echoed through the Medium’s mind as she struggled with the Swarmling clawing at her leg, making so many disgusting noises as it dug into her. She kicked it away with her other leg, sending it careening into the wall before it promptly jumped right back on top of her chest. Lunasa was saying something to her, but she wasn’t paying attention, putting all her energy into holding the beast back with her arms. A sharp tongue emerged from its underside and stuck Lucy in the shoulder, leaving a bloody hole in her dress. She yelped, and her arm buckled, sending the creature falling towards her, and she was convinced that might have been it until Lunasa appeared behind it, embedding a litany of sickles in its carapace. It promptly faded away, and Lucy slowly rose to her feet, wincing as she attempted to put weight on her arm. ”Are you okay?!” The moth asked, fluttering all around her in an erratic pattern. ”I, uh…” Lucy said through pained breaths, staring at the floor and noticing all the scratches around her leg. ”Not really.” ”Do you think you’re able to fight?” ”It’s probably a stupid idea after what just happened, Lucy started. ”But I think I’ll keep hanging back a bit once we get outside. Maybe try to keep some pressure on this, I don’t know.” She suddenly realized she was speaking out loud again. This Spirit-chatting stuff was hard. ”That works for now.” Lunasa said. Lucy cradled her injured shoulder as she stumbled towards the school entrance. That little bastard waiting for her to open the door like that was a nasty trick. She kept forgetting that these things weren’t just animals… Wait, was that a wheelchair? It was weird that this was the first thing that registered to Lucy, but it was. Two women, one in a wheelchair, one carrying a body… There were probably questions to be asked here, but the Medium’s mind was still stuck at “Oh god, I hope I’m not losing too much blood” for that to really register. ”Oh, ummm…” Lucy stammered, her Spirit floating closely behind her. ”Hi?”
