Imagine it like Han Solo being frozen in carbonite in Star Wars. They are alive, but basically placed in an encapsulated stasis...in this case a 'stasis' with an exterior fossil-looking effect. It is a riff on how irl fossils are, basically, preserved remains of (formerly) living things. For a human this could honestly save their life if they are on the brink of death, till healing can be applied at least, though for something like a lesser monster this could be a fancy way to encapsulate them and deal the final blow in some flash Power Rangers style.
