The Cantabrigian Painter. The English Piper. The Reborn Orpheus. Roger Keith Barrett was born to a middle-class family in the wake of the Second World War in the university town of Cambridge, some miles outside of London. The city of eccentric geniuses, it seemed his life was in some ways always destined for madness - or at least the English eccentricity which sent the Race's sons hurdling throughout the World in conquest of Empire. He lived unassumingly, perhaps quite normal, experiencing joy and sadness in equal amounts as he grew up, building friendship at a Boys' School that would last a lifetime. His father, a gifted doctor, passed on only a month away from Roger's sixteenth birthday. His father's favorite, Roger took his father's death the hardest and fell into various arts and talents to occupy his time. Running track, taking up painting, and even buying a guitar from his own dime. This latter of talents, spurned on by his mother's desire to see her son overcome the grief, would see the local social circles gathering at the Barrett household for impromptu concerts, fueled by new-found marijuana and the English trademark of beer. It would be around this time that Roger would become Syd, taken from a local jazz musician. And so a new identity was born. After bouncing through Cambridgeshire High School for Boys, meeting a Roger Waters and forming an impromptu band which played small-time gigs in the surrounding area, and then a follow-up in the Cambridge Technical College art department, he was readily accepted into the Camberwell College for Arts in London, enrolling in the summer of 1964. Linking up with Roger, who went off to London's Regent Street Polytechnic for architecture, they formed together another band which took on a menagerie of names. The Screaming Abdabs, The Meggadeaths, Sigma 6, and then finally the Tea-Set. When they came across another band with the same name, Syd - in a flash of maddening brilliance - rechristened them as the Pink Floyd Sound. The core set of Syd, Roger, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason was formed, with the peripherals falling off as the core-four turned more towards the music, and the hanger-ons towards their careers. By 1966, the band had moved away from the standard blues repertoire of the usual British club bands and, inspired by Syd's psychedelic ventures with the new drug LSD, into the realm of improvised rock. The Pink Floyd was picked up by the UFO Club, a symbol of the burgeoning British Underground, and quickly became their house band, playing improvisational numbers - highly influenced by jazz as much as rock - that lasted for hours, adding the soundtrack to the growing psychedelic movement. The band grew ever popular and soon found themselves sponsored by two managers, Andrew King and Peter Jenner. Unbeknownst to Syd or to the band, the two had been contracted by the Tavistock Institute, which was heavily involved in mind altering operations. Disguised as Syd's supporters, they put him up in a flat in London after he left Camberwell on 101 Cromwell Road, a notorious acid house which would have disastrous consequences for the pursuit of his art. 1966 and the early part of 1967 would go by in a blur. They would tour the largest spots - the UFO, Roundhouse, the Cromwellian, and everywhere in between. The public had begun to even take notice of this peculiar happening that was rippling through the metropole of the former British Empire, and soon the Beatles' own record company EMI would offer the Pink Floyd a commercial deal. Some singles, a few albums of songs, and fame forever. It seemed too good to be true, but yet, here it was. The Pink Floyd took the country by storm as they signed to EMI, releasing two hit singles (Arnold Layne and See Emily Play), organizing a festival at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and taking part as the crowning jewel of the 14 Hour Technicolour Dream - playing their set as the sun peaked over the English horizon. Their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, was released to much acclaim. But all was not well within the camp. The band's relentless touring and recording schedule took its toll upon Syd. Only a few weeks before the release of their debut album, Syd unknowingly was dosed with an experimental LSD-substitute named STP. A 48-hour trip wracked him and before he had even come down, was forced by the management to be put up on Top of the Pops for the third week's showing of See Emily Play. A radio interview coinciding with the debut album's release had to be cancelled as Syd left without even a word. All of this culminated in the disastrous American Tour. The band set off in November on a rushed schedule, with Syd still reeling from his trip months prior and no time to rest. Interviewers were met with at best cryptic and short answers and at worst total silence. He was dosed yet again with the same STP in San Francisco, leading him to detune his guitar until the strings fell off, and then sitting down on the stage. As a final dishonor, he was nearly electrocuted to death as an electric surge went through his guitar at the Cheetah Club in New York. The band, defeated and fatigued, returned to England and demanded a break. A break! The managers scoffed, but Syd would not budge. He had no intention of going out there, perhaps ever again, and so EMI relented. Three weeks, they would have three weeks. As the rest of the band set off to the sunny Mediterranean island of Formentera, still in pleasant conditions although it was December, Syd went off towards Yorkshire, the venerable English farming county of hardy folk and thoroughly English lifestyle. Perhaps here, he would find his peace.
