Name: Hayama Mana
Age: 16
Appearance:

Personality: Mana is a fairly shy person. She prefers to have her nose in a book in the back of class than talk to people and discuss. Well, that is, when she doesn’t know people. She’s a heavy otaku and tries to not make it too well known. She’s really friendly with the people that do figure out and accept that, though boistrous people tend to make her nervous when they talk to her regardless as well as pretty girls and boys. One thing of note, however, is she can seem to talk to people if she uses something as an intermidiary. Such as a familiar or a phone with a voice changer.

Abilities: Mana has fairly good magical circuits despite her questionable heritage. That said, her practical knowledge is a bit on the lacking side. She has learned how to create familiars (almost obsessedly so) but her other skills are a bit on the lacking side. She has minor knowledge of basic magecraft otherwise.

History: Mana’s family is a rather recent family in the scope of the world of Magecraft. Her mother was forced into an arraged relationship with a mage from some more well known family. He was known as abusive, but having a child from the stock of a greater family was all that mattered to the family. She became pregnant but escaped that world and the abuse it entailed and cut ties with her family, adopting the last name “Hayama”. She had friends in Tokyo that took her in and helped her throughout the pregnancy and afterward. Over the next couple of years, Mana and her mother moved into their own place. With just the two of them, they lived a fairly standard life. Mana finds a love for manga and anime in the years that follow. One day, her mother finds that she doesn’t want to hide the truth from her daughter forever. She contemplates and tells Mana the truth of their circumstances when the girl is ten. She doesn’t give any specific information such as the family’s name or who her father was but offers to teach her. Excitedly, Mana pulled out a manga volume and asks if it were possible to make something like “this” pointing to a girl with cat ears on the cover. Her mother replied with “sometime”. Over the next couple of years, they went over the concepts and made a familiar for Mana. Her mother procured the “ingredients” and gave Mana the instructions to make the familiar herself. She was successful and named the resulting familiar “Cocoa” on account of the cat’s brown fur. The next week, her mother disappeared with just a note left behind. ”Hey Sweetie. Sorry for suddenly disappearing. With your familiar to help you now, I figured now was the time for me to go and cause a ruckus in America. I’m going to distract the Family and set them up on the wrong trail. They followed my trail into the west of the country but… Well… They’ve sent out some agents elsewhere. I want to pull their attention elsewhere so they won’t even think about Japan. You should have enough money for food and more of your manga. Sorry if I didn’t teach you more, but this takes precedence… If there’s anything you need help with, don’t be afraid of asking the Yamada’s. I love you, Mom” Sad as she was, Mana was a strong girl and understood her situation. She went about her daily life with the assistance of her familiar, starting to keep herself rather unnoticed in class, worried there might be spies from the Family anywhere. A year later, she got an envelope from her mother that included a note, tickets and papers to Fusang City. “They’ve got some information about Japan. It seems I made a mistake. I made some friends here in America and it seems they’ve been made enemies of the Family so they’re happy to help our situation. From now on, you’re going to be a student in Fusang. Remember we talked about it that one time? Well, I think the best way for you to hide is in the crowd. Go, study and make some friends. I’m still fine over here, don’t worry about me. Just enjoy your student life with Cocoa.” And so, the girl and her familiar left for Fusang.

Other: Mana’s mother taught her both English and Japanese. She never figured Mandarin would be a necessity for her.
