Something like that. He and Nocturnal have a beef going, because he wears a set of leather armour that's designed to look exactly like that of a Nightingale's (crafted by his grandfather, a thief-fanatic who used to spin him colourful yarns of their adventures) but refuses to actually [i]become[/i] a Nightingale himself. As involuntary penance she's plagued him with bad luck until he cooperates, but because he was having a bad stream of luck to start with, it's sort of counteracting itself and working in his bizarre favour. 
As for the Thieves Guild, they needed a man in Cyrodiil who could talk himself out of a tricky situation, and [i]into[/i] an ideal one (like, for example, a castle garden policy!)
So they asked him really, really nicely.
But just to be doubly sure, they also robbed everything that wasn't nailed down from his Riften home, and ransomed it off to him in exchange for his assistance. 

Glad to hear it! I'm sure it'll make for some fun dialogue, at any rate!
