Yes, they are drones. Funnels is just an ubiquitous way of calling out semi-independent drones launched from mechas (cuz' that's how they are named in Gundam, and anime fans just adopted the terminology for anything that looks even similar) that I used it as a default. Generally the idea with these things is to be used as support weapons for saturation tactics, this is why the number may seem large, though I actually went with a very small load to say the truth.

They are a battlefield control weapon that require quite a bit of skill to use efficiently, mostly because they are quite weak when not used in great numbers.
