Those dreams have since been pushed aside. Not many people know the real her - most just assuming the worst from the gossip on the streets.[/sub] 𝔹𝕚𝕠𝕘𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕙𝕪
[sub]Dolores Laarman and Kenny Drake had been high school sweethearts. Contrary to what the tabloids might claim, they were indeed hopelessly in love with each other. Dolores' family were, what many people in her tiny hometown would claim, from the wrong side of the tracks. Her home was a cosy little suburban flat situated just on the borders of the downtown area. It wasn't much by any stretch of the imagination - she had grown up accustomed to the fact that she would never have a bedroom to herself while she lived there, nor would she ever be able to afford the pretty clothes the other girls in her class wore - however, there was love within those paper-thin walls, and for that she was grateful. As was typical in most US high schools throughout the late-70's, there was a very distinct class divide between pupils. The blue-collar kids vs the wealthy, trust-fund kids. Kenny Drake was the top of the wealthy - everyone bowed down to him. And he bowed down to the beautiful Dolores Laarman. Despite her lack of wealth, they were king and queen of the school. And with the king came dreams that could only be followed to Los Angeles. Kenny was a musician - or, at least, he tried his best to be, and Dolores would spend hours listening to him play his guitar, or talk about playing his guitar, or even talk about the fame he would get from playing his guitar. So, naturally, she followed him and his dreams to LA. Because she loved him. The truth was, Kenny was not that good. His rich parents had spent thousands on the best music lessons money could buy, but the talent just wasn't there. It did not take him long to realise this, upon arriving in LA and only landing himself a job as a mere PA, and he watched his dream crash and burn before his very eyes. Dolores, on the other hand, had LA captivated. Sure, she was a beauty, but she had this charm to her that had rockstars falling over themselves trying to get her name. I wish I could tell you her love for Kenny made her blind to these advances, but this is not the romance story she had so longed for it to be. Dolores found herself being invited to parties, to clubs, and to the events an LA fledgling could only ever dream of being invited to. She insists that it's important for everyone to know that, at first, she would only attend such events for Kenny's sake. She would push his name into every conversation she could, whisper suggestions of listening to his music into the ears of some of the top producers in the country. But they were never interested in Kenny - for the first time in her life, they were interested in her. She had even the wealthiest of men and women alike wanting her by their side. They would murmur in her ear: "You're sweet... delicious... like candy. Like a lollipop. Come here, Lolly. Come here." And so Lolly was born. And the attention she got was more addictive than any drug they would ever supply her with. As one would expect, things did not end well between Kenny and Dolores. It was a hot summer night - sweltering, in fact - and Lolly had left their shared flat earlier that evening to 'mingle with the socialites'. Of course, that really meant sitting on the lap of the richest man in the room - giggling at everything he said and basking in the admiring stares of everyone around her. And Kenny had walked in on her doing just that - much to her surprise. He never showed up to parties like this. Not with the cocaine, and the ecstasy and the booze. That was the last time Kenny ever let himself see his first love - in a drug-fuelled haze, being touched up by some rich guy whose name she didn't even know. Lolly supposed that was her wake-up call, coming back to a half-empty flat with Kenny's set of keys left on the breakfast bar the next morning. It took a few days for the heartbreak to hit - probably once the drugs had finally left her system - and it was then that she started writing down her feelings in the form of lyrics. The emptiness she felt inside, and the hole in her heart Kenny had left behind. She was fully prepared to leave LA behind - to just pack up and go; but remember those rich producers? They had other ideas. She owed them thousands of dollars from the drugs they had supplied her with, the expensive clothes they dressed her in, and even the apartment she was living in, they claimed. And either she would stay in LA, sending them a portion of her monthly earnings until the debt was paid off, or they would come down on her with the full force of the expensive lawyers she didn't stand a chance against. And so she finds herself stuck in LA - the groupie that gave up everything for a glimmer of fame. And she hates herself for it. But, in amongst the heartbreak and devastation she insists she deserves, she has found a new dream: a glimpse of a future in music she would never allow herself to hope for.
