Much of the surrounding area is covered in pine forests, but to the southwest is open tundra. Beyond that, in the west, is open sea. In the north and west, the hills turn to tall, snow-capped mountains, where the tribe rarely venture due to the dangers of the cold and wild animals. Within what they consider their own land, there are several landmarks. The most important of these, obviously, is the village. Just southwest, about a 20 minute walk away, is the overlook, a large, rocky hill that juts out to a cliff. To the east, about an hour's walk away, is the Cave of Ancestors, a large cave near the base of one of the mountains. Far to the south, across a good stretch of tundra and a couple hours' walk, are the Geyser Pools. These are shallow pools of water left behind by the geysers that spray here, coated with colorful minerals to make the pools look different colors. It is a good place to find brightly colored rocks and clays for paints and dyes, and is also a good place to bathe, since the water is always so warm. However, one has to be careful not to be sprayed by the boiling water from an erupting geyser. There is a small stream that flows west out of the pools and to the ocean. Farther south than that are a set of cliffs overlooking the sea. Part of them has jagged rocks at the bottom, and it's generally a good plan to steer clear of the cliffs altogether. [more landmarks to be added as we go] There are other tribes that live nearby, but they are a distance away and very rarely make contact. When groups of seekers or hunters do encounter other tribes, the encounters are usually friendly, but there have been times of conflict in the past. [sup]
☾ ✧ ✰ ✴ ✩ ✵ ✰ ✬ ☽ ☾ ✧ ✰ ✴ ✩ ✵ ✰ ✬ ☽
[/sup] [sup]
ᏉᎥᏝᏝᗩᎶᏋ ᏉᎥᏝᏝᗩᎶᏋ
[/sup] Live Version The village itself is actually not particularly large, consisting of a hodgepodge of hide tends and very simple wood, stone, and clay buildings. The village is surrounded by a very simple barrier that amounts to little more than wooden poles stuck upright in the ground, to help deter wild animals that would otherwise try to scavenge in the village. The river shore is on the west side of the village, providing both drinking water and a pleasant place for leisure, although young children are typically warned not to go near the river without supervision. The largest huts, those of the druids and the chieftain, at the northern edge of the village, and along with the crafting and storage shelters, surround an open area that also contains the tribe's main bonfire. Though other people often keep smaller fires in or around their own homes, this tends to be the main gathering and production place of the tribe. Both the druids' tend and the chieftain's hut are also considered communal locations, despite also being personal dwellings. Both of these structures have open front rooms where people may freely come and go when seeking the help of the druids or chieftain, with smaller "rooms" blocked off by pelts, which are the private spaces of those who live there. The chieftain's hut, in particular, is quite large and tends to be an important gathering space when the weather is too poor to have village meetings by the bonfire, as it can fit most of the tribespeople (somewhat uncomfortably) within its walls. There is no wealth distinction between those who live in the primitive huts and those that live in the tents. Both types of structures have their merits and disadvantages, and it tends to be more a matter of a family's preference. Though the village is largely communal, people do take ownership of their own spaces, and kin typically live together in one structure. It is considered quite rude to enter a home where you do not live without invitation, and there is a concept of theft. However, though there is a degree of ownership, it is considered unethical to hoard important things to oneself, such as tools that are widely needed by many people, or more food than one could reasonably eat in a short period of time. Things like personal weapons, jewelry, clothing, and some small stockpile of food is typical.
