Day 3, Week 4, Cycle 1 Sobek marshlands. Springtime, 30 C*, Sunny The Sobek had made good headway, a small village had formed, with roofs made from rattan struts holding up fern roofs. A few roofed platforms protected firewood and some sensitive tools from the damp below. In places such raised platforms had even been constructed over the flooded parts of the area to create extra storage space. Vorak had gathered several skilled Sobek whom helped build and craft various things. Some weaved baskets from rattan, while others made more complex tools. Like a bow-drill fire-starter. A team of burly Sobek was also beginning to gather stones. As big as they could carry, which was dozens of kilos in some cases, they were hardly massive. A bit larger rocks was possible to move after the makers had provided them with sleds. These rocks were being gathered and some were being worked with rudimentary tools. The plan was to make some bricks, some slabs and some tools. The fire-starters needed rocks for durability and a nice slab was constructed to commemorate the founding of their settlement. The time went on, Ata made sure to help, plan and delegate to the best of his abilities. The Sobek were pleased with his leadership and he helped a few younger Sobek to found the Seekers, led by Sebl, the first seeker. The seekers travelled and tried to get a sense of the land, to find new resources and to point out stones for the makers to gather. Stone wasn't that common in the swamp, but to the south they found the coast, which had many more than the swamp. Day 1, Week 12, Cycle 1 Sobek marshlands. Springtime, 38 C*, Overcast As the rain poured down Ata and Grazh got a funny feeling. They stared toward the heaven for a long time. -"A storm is brewing." Vorak broke the silence, the others slowly nodded to the sky before turning their heads to the maker. -"Yes, i can feel it in my tail, the weather is changing." Ata concurred, turning to the village. -"These buildings will not survive a storm." Vorak just nodded in response before answering. -"We do not have enough stone to make even a single building. Let alone several. We will not be safe inside buildings." -"Yes Vorak, we will not sit safely in buildings. This saddens me." Ata was visibly distraught, until Grazh spoke. -"It matters not, we are Sobek! We are hardy and wind and water will not deter us. We will survive with ease!" He accentuated their hardiness with a beat on the chest. -"Yes, the people will endure. But what about the things we have made? Can we protect them?" Ata's worries led to the trio and several other who had gathered scratch their neck-skins in thought. They sat down and began to think, many began to go and do work. After half an hour, Vorak spoke. -"We have some stone, i can create a safe with stone bricks, held together with dried clay. That way we can safeguard our tools and our first things." Ata stood up and put a hand on Voraks shoulder. -"This will work, you are wise and clever, shows that you are the first maker, let it be so! We will focus on getting stone bricks." The settlement became abuzz with activity, many who had before done other tasks were now put to help make stone bricks. It was time consuming to form the stones into bricks of the same size with only stones and sticks, but they were patient. One such group were the hunters. They had been succesful and the Sobek had figured out several interesting ways to store meat. Underwater it was protected from the flying insects and below they were kept safe with the puddletoads or tadpole hunters as the Sobek called them eating the larvae that lived in the water. The meat drawing them in but being far to unwieldy for themselves to eat. Over the months the Sobek and the tadpole hunters had begun to form a sort of symbiotic relationship. As in the Sobek let the tadpole hunters be, and the toads ate the vermin that risked ruining their meat. The hunters had actually because of this created a bit of a stash of stored food. Day 3, Week 12, Cycle 1 Sobek marshlands. Springtime, 37 C*, Overcast The seekers had returned, they were excited as well. Ata was quick to go to them as they showed a strange rock to many in the settlement. As Ata came close Sebl handed him the rock and exclaimed. -"I found a blue-green rock, it sparkled in the light so i knew i needed to show it!" Ata studied the strange rock, it almost looked bubbly, with a turqoise sheen which reflected the light at certain angles. He called for Vorak whom immediately went to him. As Ata handed him the rock his eyes widened and began to study the rock, scratch at it and rub it. With a firm grip, he utilized a weakness in the rock and broke it in two. Inside was an even more beautiful couloration, sparkling turquise which easily glinted in the light and patches of golden hue which shone. The eyes of those present lit up and turned to Vorak. -"What can you make with it?" Ata's question was calm, but excitement was noticeable despite his attempts to hide it. -"I think... i don't know why, but we need fire... this is done with fire...." Voraks answer was cryptic and full of thoughts, those who knew him more closely noticed confusion as well, since he didn't really know why fire would be the way to handle the rock. Those gathered curiously followed Vorak, Ata leaning on an uprooted young mangrove that looked interesting using it as a staff, the others just watching the old Sobek pile on a bunch of firewood on the fire, putting the rock inside and getting hold of a large leaf he could fan with combined with blowing on the fire. The fire was somewhat big, definetely the biggest they'd lit yet, even if the one they lit during their first feast was nearly as big. -"You think this will work? What will it do?" Ata being the speaker voiced everyones concerns. -"The rocks with colour, some of them can be burned, inside them is something useful... i think." Vorak tried to sound sure of himself, but failed for in truth he didn't really know what he was doing. None of those present ridiculed Vorak though, they all felt odd familiarity with all manner of things, even if it became rarer and rarer with each day, so they just assumed he had such a feeling. After several hours the fire died down, with a pair of sticks Vorak dug in the ashes. But it seemed that the brilliant rock had just been ruined. Blackened and fragile, it broke apart as he tried to maniplate it. Utterly defeated Vorak sat down and looked apologetic. -"I thought... i felt..." Ata walked to him and put his hand on the old Sobeks shoulder. -"We do not blame you, you did what you felt was best, tried to help our kind. One cannot succeed every time." Vorak was still upset but felt a lot better. The congregation was dispersing, the dissappointment was all around as they wanted to see Vorak succeed in whatever it was that he tried. A Sobek child, barely a meter tall and probably just a few years old began to poke in the ash with a stick of his own. Being inspired by Vorak. The ash was a whitish grey in most parts, having embers in it still from the heat of the burn. Cocking his head from side to side, the child played, until he saw something. -"PRETTY!!" He loudly exclaimed, all adults had left the bonfire and only Ata was curious enough to look at the child. -"Pretty pretty!" The child ran after Vorak and yanked his tail with excitement. -"Grrrr, What do you want?" He unleashed a guttural growl which momentarily made the child back away, but he regained his posture. -"You made pretty! See!" In his hand he showed Vorak a tiny pebble of shining copper. It was roughly the size of a grain, but it shined with gold. Vorak realizing the situation looked really close, it was true, it did work, whatever he did. He lifted the child with his hands in front of him and said. -"Child, you make me happy! Let us find the pretty rocks. You will help me for i can barely see them." Ata had closed the distance and was now checking the tiny pebble. It was true, the golden shine had been driven from the rock with fire. For at least two hours, the small Sobek and Vorak helped each other find as much of the copper they could. They carefully put the small pieces in on a plate made from rock. It was not much but Vorak was sure that he could make something if he had more of the rocks. Ata felt joy when he heard Vorak tell the child of ways to create tools and how the child would become an excellent maker. It was as such that the Sobek began to smelt copper, it would take vorak a long time to figure out how to optimize the process enough so that a usable product could be obtained, but this crucial first step had been overcome. Day 2, Week 17, Cycle 1 Sobek marshlands. Springtime, 30 C*, Heavy Overcast and winds. Rain was pouring down many times a day instead of the usual drizzle once or twice. Most of the shelters that were before were now dismantled or heavily reinforced, with rocks holding down ropes made from bulbflowers keeping the roofs in check while the walls were greatly improved for instead of just clay and plant fiber, the Sobek had made several mangrove planks using axes and created a single sturdy building and a pair of storage platforms that while improved didn't compare to the main building. At the centre of the dry patch, in its highest point the safe had just been finished. It looked like a large sarcophagus, able to house a fully grown Sobek if need be. In this tomb, the important items were being gathered. The first dagger, the first axe, the slab commemorating the founding of the settlement as well as the old altar. Many other items were also put into the safe, baskets, food, the first attempts of weaving cloth and even Ata's skull crown, which was now improved by Vorak to feature a strap and improved comfort. The tomb was then sealed, simply by putting planks on top with stone bricks holding it down. Then it was slathered in clay. The winds were beginning to pick up, every day they realized that it was worse than before. Some of their shelters wouldn't even have survived these winds let alone a full blown storm. Day 1, Week 18, Cycle 1 Sobek marshlands. Springtime, 23 C*, Violent storm. The storm finally came. In a way it was a relief since they would see their preparations were not in vain. In praxis however, it was horrible. Sobek could not stand in the open, the wind would chill them and they'd become sluggish and weak, so the grown ups would lie in the water beneath the mangroves. Sticking up their nostrils and eyes lying motionless. The waters would become colder, the air was already colder, but the storm would make it worse, the Sobek would suffer, but they would endure. The young were however put in the sturdy hut, together with Alaga, the first Caretaker. A blueish middle aged female who would stay with the young and make sure they behaved, they were entertained and only ate what their rations would ordain. The children were kind of thrilled to begin with, Alaga was popular and they played games, crafted things and made up stories together, around the firelight which they huddled close to for warmth. They reckoned the children would not survive the harsh conditions outside so this descision was made. The one most subjected to the harsh weather was Ata. He diligently went from Sobek to Sobek to check on them, every day he checked on the hut with the young and made sure to get things for them if they needed things. At times being totally exhausted from moving about during the day, he at times slept in the hut. Whenever he did he took up a massive space of the hut. Alaga forced him to let the young share his heat. Which he agreed to, reluctantly. The seekers stopped their efforts all together. But they had gotten a good sense of the land when the other had made preparations. They knew they lived on a peninsula, even if they didn't know how big the peninsula was. They also learned there was a large strait to the north leading into a bay with a delta to the northwest. This area was far away however and getting to the strait had taken a lot of effort in the declining weather. But they made sure that they would explore this delta in the future.
