You could have him seeking out someone, he does know Althalus or maybe one of the teachers like Satori or Khan even. Though you'll find the later likely conversing with Ponders in the Dinning Hall, before he gets his breakfast. There's also students wandering around and maybe he bumps into them or they do something to catch his attention?
