Two things;
I'd prefer it be set in the 1970-1990 range, or earlier. A few things work better if cell phones and the internet aren't a thing.

Second, it'd definitely end up drifting into the supernatural. I've got a couple different ideas of how, but most of it comes down to a ranch hand acting a bit off. Then, when Jaymie decides to learn why, she gets introduced to a Very different view of the world.
