Great question! The causes and effects of Equinox are still being studied, but scientists have currently ruled out genetics or known physical processes as the source of humanity's powers. I can go into the nitty-gritty of how it works if you'd like me to, but the gist of it is that human will is causing aberrations in the physical world. These abnormalities align with whatever the ability of the user is, so there aren't any real constraints on what abilities can and can't be (within reason). Everyone got an ability in the event, but the usefulness and potency are distributed randomly.

Both of those work well! There are tons of neat things you can do with that.
