Name: Mortimer "Mort" Memento Alias: Dead Man Image/Description: Lean, tall, and looks like someone had stripped away his flesh and baked him in an oven for a few days. The guy looks like a zombie. Age: 32 Gender: Male, but lost the bits some time ago. Race: Mutant Alignment: Neutral Mentor: None Skills/Meta Abilities: Skills - Skill wise Mort is a decent fighter, having spent a good part of his mutant life fighting. He favors range combat over close-quarters and thus he moves fast, hits hard, but isn't great in a brawl. He does however have an incredibly high pain tolerance and things that would hurt and torture others is just quaint for him. Mort is also an explosive expert and can usually cobble together bombs with whatever material happens to be on hand. He rarely ever gets into a fight without being strapped with IED's. Lastly for skills Mort has a notable ability to not need sleep, thus giving him a lot more time to do whatever he feels like doing with his time. Mostly making explosives. Powers - Mort's powers enables him to possess corpses whenever his body dies, and this is most notable as his original physical body will turn to ash upon death. This allows him to switch bodies to escape capture so long as he knows where a corpse is located for him to possess, though notably there may be a time limit. He's never seen what happens whenever he goes without a body for too long, but he knows it's strangely painful, so he seeks out whatever corpses he can should he perish. However as he is animated the bodies and not preserving them, the corpses will continue to decay and rot over time, and while it doesn't adversely affect his physical abilities, it does make it obvious whatever body he's possessing is a corpse and this make it easier to figure out who he's possessing. Personality: Mort is a very professional person. Not really one to speak out unless it's to respond or address something, and not particularly social either, though that has to due with how his appearance can unnerve most people. He tries not to make a big deal out of it but he knows that he scares most people and often wishes that he could look more human, however surgical treatments to look more human just make him look incredibly uncanny, and never carry over after resurrection. Outside of work he is again, still pretty quiet, but more willing to talk and converse with others when there isn't anything important going on. He generally likes spending his free time playing games where he is like a completely different person online, almost violently aggressive, but this rarely ever carries over into real life. Annoying and making him angry isn't too difficult, but Mort rarely ever feels true hatred. Even when he sees terrible, inhumane things, he's gotten so numb to what sort of cruelty people can inflict on each other that he simply accepts it as much a part of life as living and dying. This also makes it harder for him to connect to people at times, as his lack of empathy can make him unable to truly understand other people's struggles, whether they're innocent people suffering from a villain's injustice, or an evil person trying to make the world a better place in their own eyes. Thus his staunch professionalism: as long as the contracts are followed, he'll believe whatever you say needs to be believed. Likes: A job well done, video games, stuff-crusted cheese pizza Dislikes: People failing at their jobs, hackers, sour food Backstory: Mort was just another unfortunate fact of life: kids sometimes have parents who are not ready to raise them. His mother was just a young teen who got knocked up by her then boyfriend, and put Mort into adoption since she lacked the means to support him. He's never seen his parents since than and for a while that was a big deal for Mort. But he'll soon have other problems. A rather rich celebrity scientist came to his orphanage one day and adopted him and many other children, a PR stunt to enrich the poor and disenfranchised or some such. And so for a short while Mort had all the niceties a child could want: nice clothes, tasty food, a decent education, even gifts of toys and video games. Of course again, this was all a PR student. Once the cameras turned away and a select few children were chosen to maintain the facade, unlucky kids like Mort were taken so their true purpose could be realized: creating mutants. Barely six years old and Mort was put through hell. A lot of the experiments were simply made to put stress and duress on the children, trying to force their mutant genes to evolve. A lot of kids died, and so did Mort. But dying is exactly what caused Mort's mutant gene to awaken and reveal his powers. When he came back to life he was confused, scared, and desperate to escape. But the chief scientist wasn't going to let him go that easily. It wasn't long before Mort was captured and after multiple experiments meant to test the limits and abilities of his powers, Mort was eventually indoctrinated into becoming a super soldier along with other survivors. Equipped with various means to track and control him, Mort and many other child soldiers were hired by various villains as mutant soldiers, muscles, and general purpose thuggery. While others had mutant powers that made them more effectively soldiers, Mort's powers did not improve his strength or agility in any way. The only thing he had going for him was the confidence that no matter how bad the situation was, he'd be able to get away. His resurrective immortality enabled him to escape situations where his fellows ere killed or captured, but a combination of his conditioning and his contact always meant he was caught and put back into action. It wasn't until the scientist who created him was finally caught and arrested that suddenly Mort was free. Or so he thought. Fact of the matter was, despite his circumstances, he was a criminal. Countless numbers of people killed. Hundreds of crimes committed. Innocent people killed for things he did and didn't do. Not to mention looking like the way he did, there was no way he could go back to society without getting back into prison. Someone else to put a collar on him. So once his creators, his contractors, and his past was gone, he went underground. Gone dark. He started running the shadows as a gun for hire, the only thing he knew how to do well. He started going by the name "Dead Man". Because that's all he was. That's all he is now.
